There are 2 updates that are a must on a Windows 8.1 computer in order to
get the Windows Upgrade notice in your system tray. They are:
KB 2976978 and KB 3035583.

IMO, For anyone who is not tech inclined they should simply leave things alone and install whatever comes for the OS, whether it's optional or important.

If you are not sure if you have these two required updates...
Search your installed updates using the search box on your "installed updates" screen.

To be sure I get mine I have the Win10 upgrade reserved. Now all I have to do is wait for the Microsoft servers to get to me.  8)

There are probably a lot of updates for that new computer. I know my new laptop that came with Windows 8.1
had a lot of updates. I've done all of the updates and it's ready for Windows 10 upgrade.

My computer is supposed to be delivered on Friday so I'm sure once I hook it up and check for windows updates I'll spend a lot of time installing all of the updates.

-midnight,

You might want to look into the built-in Windows disk imaging program while you are at it.

mchain,

Where do I find it?

After reading this I might not set my new computer up right away.

Good question.

Here:  http://www.pctechbytes.com/windows-8/create-system-image-windows-8-1/

And:  https://duckduckgo.com/?q=how+to+find+built-in+windows+8.1+disk+imaging+program

Be sure to stick with Windows 8.1 instructions.

Here I am stuck with ol' Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit, so my answer is going to be from the Internet.

Cheers!
