Hi -midnight,

I wonder whether there are computers that won't upgrade because they cannot handle the Windows10 requisitions.
How about fast silent ssd driven computers? I haven't seen the windows 10 update icon yet on mine either, allthough I got my new Windows 8.1 computer a week ago.

Hi polonus,

This new win 8.1 computer is exactly like my other win 8.1.  The other one showed the win 10 icon and so does my win 7.  When I ordered this new one it showed free upgrade to win 10 on July 29.

I don't know whether or not I have all of the necessary win updates installed in order to upgrade.  I installed 120 win updates on the day this computer was set up so I would think they would have included the ones needed to upgrade to win 10,

Well, -midnight, I would not worry too much, as they would start from June 29th henceon and to cover all these upgrades surely will take their servers some time. As I said in an earlier posting I read that it is better to wait a while to see how the new windows is being accepted, there are now loads of users crying the new Windows 10 updates resulting in BSODs via a lousy Nvidia back-up resulting in a Blue Screen of Death! There are more reasons to continue to work Win 8.1 and even Vista (supported as to 2017) and you can wait for the free update until later in the year and the bugs has shown.
Better wait for Windows 10 service pack 1 - I am joking, but better wait a bit.
9 Reasons to wait a bit
1. - look you meet the specifications: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-specifications
2. You can upgrade one year long.
3. You are on Windows 7.
4. You use the Win 7 desktop gadgets.
5. From Windows Vista you will still have years of full support.
6. You use smart files with OneDrive.
7. You use old peripherals.
8. You like Windows Media Center.
9. You do not like to experience the growing pains of Windows 10.

And another reason, we aren't all bob3160's that rush into using new things right away. ;)  :)

I still don't have the little windows icon yet.  I check for win updates everyday but they are all optional.  If I should decide to install win 10 in a few months how could I?
Like I said previously " patience " you only asked yesterday.

polonus...........I installed most of my win updates on July 24 and a few more on the 25th.

I wasn't planning on doing the win 10 upgrade for several month's.  I definitely don't want to upgrade on the day it's released as I'm not tech savy and should I have any problems with win 10 I wouldn't know how to fix them.

I'll just wait and watch.

AV firms warn one should be ready for Windows 10 where your AV software is concerned and also Avast does so:

I just can't see adding something else to the system if there is already something
built into the system that does an excellent job. :)
But, that's the point. The 3rd party defraggers , partition managers, and imaging programs do a better job and almost always do it faster. For instance, I had to download and use the free version of Paragon to delete a partition on a hard drive because Disk Management in Windows 8.1 wouldn't do it. Disk management usually works fine but in this case, it wouldn't. The built in imaging program works but is painfully slow just like the defrag program always has been. The third party programs wouldn't exist if the built in ones were excellent. You could even add Avast! into the discussion because it obviously does a better job than Defender.

Hi Dch48,

Defender comes back in action when you update Avast and then only before you re-start the program.
I do not know whether the MS Free Malware Removal Tool runs in the backhround while Avast is installed?
Bitdefender's 60 sec scanning tool does not conflict with Avast either as I found, but who needs that?

@ Dch48,
Your system, your choice. :)  I've never had a problem using what's already installed. :)

Not happy about this.

Because you’ve reserved, Windows will automatically take care of the download in advance. Then you’ll get a notification when your upgrade is ready to install. That way you can start using Windows 10 immediately – or schedule a time to install that’s convenient for you. If you have any more questions, check out the upgrade FAQ.

Why aren't you happy ? Would you prefer to wait hours for the upgrade to download you're finally ready ???

I don't plan on installing win 10 for several months.  I just don't feel comfortable having it downloaded.  Will it be downloaded on July 29?  It won't install win 10 on the 2nd Tuesday in August?
