Hi Hermie,

Never there existed a Windows OS that was re-written from scratch. It always has been built with new layers on old layers, and a lot of tweaking has been taken away from end-users. Think of what one could do in the past with your old DOS-malnual in hand? Even their new browser, edge, has lots of old IE code. Remember the days of the New-York hired-in spaghetti coders that had to help Redmond meet some timeline. Propriety code is almost entirely written in C, C++, and C# for Windows. Some areas of code are hand tuned/hand written assembly.

Thanks @Pol for replying.

Off-topic:
Not rewritten from scratch > software is not set up to do the job as fast as possible.

That's why modern computers are still "slow".

I updated and gateway hasn't released any updated drivers for this laptop yet. I did notice a few issues like start menu wouldn't show up bbut i fixed it by going into tablet mode and out of it, and such. Has anybody else noticed with MS Edge if you go to whatbrowser.org it says chrome 42

I read somewhere that people who are using win 7 and win 8.1 home edition didn't have the option to choose a different browser
That pertained strictly to this addition: "Free "Windows 10 Home with Bing" Edition" Even on that edition, you may still use an alternate browser but you can't make that browser the default.

Since I can't make Firefox my default browser I won't be ugrading to win 10.

After the upgrade got to "default programs" and change your default browser to which ever one you desire.

I'll be looking for a place to buy a win 10 desktop so I won't have to do the upgrade.

You need to read more carefully. Don't jump to conclusions. Actually read what was written. The version of Windows 8 that you have, does allow you to pick your own default browser.
I even posted a video that showed you exactly how to do it. (I know, I can't make you watch it. :) )

I have read every post in this topic, also watched your video  I have win 8.1 not win 8.  It would be much easier for me to buy a computer with win 10 installed.

Is the brightness set by the graphics card driver or by windows 10 itself? By default it has it set by 40%.. wasn't it a little brighter in windows 8.1? I know easy to make it brighter  ;D

Also there is a battery saver mode now..

You may send me the Windows 8.1 computer that you don't want to upgrade.
An upgrade is virtually the same as installing a very large update like SP 1 on Windows 8
(Windows 8.1 is still Windows 8 it's just been updated.)

@Midnight: how about to purchase a chromebook? Always up to date, silent, fast, low price, no issues with drivers etc. (off-topic)

Question:
Do I have to delete all third party programs before upgrading?

Kind regards, Hermie

If you're doing a clean install that that's what happens. If you're upgrading, you get to keep your programs, etc
