we will continue to keep it current via Windows Update for the supported lifetime of the device – at no cost.
Let's talk to them in 2050 or something.
Let's see if they still are rolling out updates then.

In the current Insider Preview build, you can have Windows Defender act as a second opinion.

When the following is activated in the Defender Settings:

Interesting. That feature may prove to be useful. Never hurts to get a second opinion but, wouldn't the malware removal tool included in every patch Tuesday's updates serve the same purpose? Although, if you could run the secondary Defender scan manually whenever you wanted, that might be good.

A little speculation on my part.
I suspect that this change may have more to do with windows updates being delivered automatically and not necessarily on Patch Tuesday. If the patch Tuesday was dropped then slipping in the regular Malicious Software Removal Tool KB is likely to be less regular (or perhaps too frequent).

Haven't you already got CCleaner? it'll also clean duplicates though if your not confident in these areas you shouldn't go tinkering :)

@CraigB,

I used CCcleaner 1 time on another computer but didn't mess with the registry.  I installed Duplicate Cleaner yesterday, let it scan and it found so many duplicate photo's plus a lot of duplicate files. It didn't show what the files were so I stopped the scan and uninstalled it.  I know it's best for me not go "tinkering."

I thought someone else using win 10 might have used it.

Question for you. Was the computer upgraded to Windows 10 from another version? If it was, there will be a folder called Windows.old that contains the information from the previous Windows in case you want to go back to it. That may be the source of the duplicate files. It also might be classifying thumbnails and recently accessed files as duplicates. Ccleaner will remove those.

Just remember, once you eliminate files from Widows.old, there'll be no going back.

I upgraded from win 8.1 to win 10.  Wish now I hadn't upgraded but I'm not going to go back to win 8.1.  I have over 2,000 photo's on this computer and I know some of them are duplicates.

Where is the Windows.old folder?

I'm a bit leery about using CCcleaner.

Is your HD getting full ??? If not, what's the big deal about having duplicate pictures or anything else for that matter ???

Just finished the update:

It required a repair of Avast on my 64 bit system.
