Should I disable the Avast shields before I update?
Yes. :)
+1
I shut down all programs that scan activity prior to doing the update.
(Avast, Winpatrol, Malwarebytes, etc, etc. If it scans, it could cause a problem and could possibly block something vital.)
I updated 2 systems yesterday (one 32 bit one 64 bit) following those rules and had no problem with either system.
This will also speed up the process which is a long one.

When I got the Anniversary update this morning I didn't disable anything and didn't have any problems.

I'm happy for you. Now create an image backup so that if you run into a problem, getting back will be easy.

Nothing unless you don't have an external hard drive. They don't cost much. The software can be free. Windows has a built in backupper but I would recommend either the free AOMEI Backupper or EASEUS ToDo Backup. Both are excellent but AOMEI is a little more user-friendly.

1. you need an external HD.
2. use what ever you want. I've already given you my advice.

I'll buy an external hard drive.

Would this one work?

I'm going to set up my new win 10 computer today but it comes with McAfee  installed.  Is it safe just to uninstall it from the control panel?

Sorry about getting off topic.

Everyone that wants to go back to Win 8.1 after installing Win 10 can do so within a month time, then you will keep the license to go back to Win10 in due time. Best of both worlds.

Cybersecurity is more of an attitude than anything else. Avast Evangelists.

Use NoScript, a limited user account and a virtual machine and be safe(r)!

Time is getting Shorter
The time limit for reverting back to a previous build of Windows 10 has been reduced to 10 days.
Prior to this last update, (Windows 10, v. 1607) that time frame was always 30 days.
This rule also applies to those running the Insider Preview builds.
