For me, the retained updates go back to 5/3/2017 all to do with version 1703.
I'm sure that once the next update comes along (probably Sept. 2017), the updates stored for version 1703 will be gone.

The reason I'm pointing out the August patch bug is because whereas when upgrading the OS build (from 1511 to 1607, 1607 to 1703, or 1703 to the fall update) it's normal for the update history to be wiped, that's not the case when installing a patch Tuesday update. Big difference there.

And as to why those with 1607 haven't yet updated to 1703; it's because most users still haven't been offered it yet, and as this update's bug has taught us, it's wise for the average user to not try and get updates before they are completely ready and offered directly on the user's PC (and even then one most hope there are no bugs).

See you in a few HRS. :)

I set mine off on my win7 laptop (with cable to router, not WiFi) and watched it get to 24% and went off for an hour, only to come back and it was still on 24%.  I managed to get it bump started again, it got up to 77% only to drop back to 27% only to drop back to 25% (away for a while), it went up a bit, but it keeps dropping back a little before pushing on.

At this rate I will be here for some time yet, currently on 55%, so hopefully not too long.

EDIT: Added image attachment.

I've been gone all day. This is what greeted me on my return:

I honestly don't know exactly how long it took. I've been gone for the past eight hours.
All I know is, the update happened.

That was ultimately what I found (but no news feed and temperature), though I wasn't impressed it was displayed in Edge as my default browser is Firefox. And it tried to have OneDrive set as a startup option, I don't use it so it got killed.

Hmm, it took me only 74 minutes to get to the desktops.  Once there, I had to do the user accounts, and that was done in about 13 minutes tops.  There was no start, stop, regression, start again, (download) progression was smooth and straightforward, (as was the actual install).

Could be that removal of almost all user files sped things up as Windows.old is 25.1 GB but the newest live version 1709 is 17.1 GB.  At 30 minutes = 17%, but 74 minutes was 100%, with only two restarts required.  Was finished at 87 minutes.

Did not uninstall Avast before starting.  No glitches so far.  Removed  user files totaled 11.3 GB.

Once I am satisfied all is working as it should, Windows.old will be removed, saving me 25.1 GB disk space.

[EDIT:] Fixed ambiguous statements to reflect the difference between file download and actual install.
