Microsoft releases new update for Windows 10 Version 1703, 1511 and 1607
https://mspoweruser.com/microsoft-releases-new-update-windows-10-version-1703-1511-1607/
If you're already running Windows 10 Version 1709, you're not effected.
This is the update I just received on version 1709

Not sure if it was already posted here, but here is a very useful and safe to use trick for users with very limited storage PC's. Like ones with embedded 32 GB eMMC storage. Using this method, you'll be reclaiming around 2 GB, but the amount of space will vary per installation. Although this method won't noticeable affect performance, you should only consider this option on a device with limited storage or when you don't have another choice. Just tested by myself - everything working as described.

Reduce Windows 10 footprint using Compact OS

Compact OS is a tool introduced with Windows 10 that allows you to compress the installation files and built-in desktop applications reducing the footprint and freeing up space.

Warning: This is a friendly reminder that you'll be modifying system files, and while it's safe to use the tool, bad things can always happen. It's recommended to make a full backup of your PC before proceeding.

1) Open Start.
2) Search for Command Prompt, right-click the result, and select Run as administrator.
3) Type the following command to compress the Windows 10 and applications and press Enter:
Compact.exe /CompactOS:always

After completing the steps, Compact OS will begin the process, which can take anywhere between 10 to 20 minutes, and the best part is that you don't even need to restart your device.

At any time, you can revert the changes using the same instructions, but on step No. 3, use this command
Compact.exe /CompactOS:never
and press Enter.

@YLAP,
This has been around since Windows 8.1 and was primarily designed for folks that want to run Windows on a Tablet
which is limited on storage space.
It also slows things down since it needs to decompress several files before being able to operate.

Well no way I could time it, the only way to get it was by downloading it from the Update Catalogue KB at 736MB and that didn't take long downloading at about 40Mbps.  It ran the download and installed, but came up with the update failed message that was talked about.  Going back to windows update, it now said that an update was available.

That was done via the regular WU, which didn't take too long and completed. I then rebooted and now it is reporting the correct version number in winver Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.334

Just started the update via Security and Updates on my Compaq. Oddly this update is doing the same "glitch" it did on my Envy.
Download % goes from 0-100% in about 45 seconds and then just sits there for quite some time...Then starts again from 0%
The install part did the same thing?? ::)

Will see just how long process is on this LT
Update: Yeh took a little less time on Compaq, just over 30 min.

That first countdown is for starting the download. Like being told how much longer you need to wait till
it's your turn.
Took me about 45 Min. for the download and install. Considering that I'm on hotel WiFi, that wasn't too bad. :)

Yep, same thing as schmidthouse, but saw 1st instance was for interrogation of the system.  Once that was done, entire process took 28 minutes for a ten-year old system, but I cheated.  I used a wired connection.

System has a 2.8 Pentium D.

Windows 10 version 1607 reaches end of life next month
https://www.ghacks.net/2018/03/24/windows-10-version-1607-reaches-end-of-life-next-month/
If you are still running this version, it's time to update. A new release is coming next month.
