Improving the Windows 10 update experience with control, quality and transparency
https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2019/04/04/improving-the-windows-10-update-experience-with-control-quality-and-transparency/
My cynical reply to this that Microsoft wasn't able to complete the scheduled update ontime and that headline was a great way
to not be blamed for not having the April 2019 update available on time. :)

Still haven't had the September October 2018 one yet.

Quote from: Extract from article
Beginning with the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, users will be more in control of initiating the feature OS update.  We will provide notification that an update is available and recommended based on our data, but it will be largely up to the user to initiate when the update occurs.

You're cynical Bob, I'm gobsmacked.
1.  I'm all for the user having more control.
2.  I wonder how they will handle this "we will provide notification that an update is available" hopefully better than the last one that I'm awaiting notification for 1809.

Davis,

I'm still on 1803 on my windows laptop its never even offered the fall update. I am wondering if given how close we are to the Spring update if that release is just being withheld form the automatic update channel.

I presume this was for me DavidR :)
Reading the article posted by Asyn, it would appear that MS is going to give the user more control over When and What to update.

For me the interesting bit was the "Download and install now option" section.
Quote from: Extract from article.
All Windows 10 devices with a supported version will continue to automatically receive the monthly updates. This new “download and install” option will also be available for our most popular versions of Windows 10, versions 1803 and 1809, by late May.

Just how that will be made available for version 1803, even though supported the Windows Update interface on the system would have to change to display that option. As in the image in that section of the article.

My win10 system is also a laptop and I begin to wonder if this could also be a complication.  Usually I have it on standby most of the time and not connected to the mains (unless I'm doing some heavy work of it needs charged) as windows knows if you are on battery power.

This could be further complicated by working hours and I have mine set much greater than their default setting 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. home user are likely to be at work then.  The working hours is going to become "Intelligent active hours" getting information from:
Quote from: extract from article
users will now have the option to let Windows Update intelligently adjust active hours based on their device-specific usage patterns.users will now have the option to let Windows Update intelligently adjust active hours based on their device-specific usage patterns.

Hopefully that will help.

Sorry for the typo, yes that was for you  :)

For the update interface change, there are periodic "Servicing Stack" updates that get pushed out, with one coming last month in March. These are the updates that control the Windows Update mechanics so I'm assuming whatever changes were needed were included last month.

Fingers crossed that will make the changes necessary,  I have been getting the standard Patch Tuesday updates as 1803 is still a supported version.

The big concern is if the May 2019 feature update version 1903 didn't happen on this machine, the 2018 1803 would drop out of the supported versions.  As it looks like MS are getting tighter on what versions are supported.
