Avast 4 Home
« on: August 12, 2005, 07:07:18 PM »
:-\ Avast 4 Home is a dangerous product. It doesnt work, causes continual crashes and freezes and continually comes up with "RPC" Error, whatever that is, this product should be withdrawn immediately until it is corrected and people using the programme should be compensated for the loss of data and repairs to machines brought on by its use. you would be well advised to remove it without delay. A satisfied subscriber!.

Well I beg to differ, I have been using avast home for well over a year with no real problems, certainly nothing like what you mention.

Well if you were prepared to explain your problem instead of going off on a rant, I'm sure we would be able to help you resolve the problem.

The RPC error is usually associate with having a second AV installed or leaving remnants behind that can cause conflict.

If you had chosen to search the forum you would have seen threads related to your problem and also suggestions to resolve it.

What antivirus software were you using before avast, and did you uninstall it?
What OS are you using?

Apart from all that, everyone speaks to you as if you are an IT expert, not all of us are (some people specialise in other things) so any advice written in layman terms would be greatly appreciated.

What version of Norton Antivirus was that? Symantec has a special removal tool for NAV 2003 (search symantec site for RNAV2003). I'm not sure about newer versions...

This link may help; check to make sure what version of Norton you had and what OS you're using.  There should be instructions at the bottom of the page too.

Oops I almost forgot the most important part...

For what it's worth, I just installed Avast! on my dad's computer after removing Norton SystemWorks 2003. The Add/Remove program seemed to work, but having heard about all the problems Norton can cause, I followed the manual removal instructions (see previous post) as well. Most of it was already gone, but there was some definite debris left behind.

Once I removed everything, Avast installed and ran just fine.

:) I too was  a NAV 2003 user and following removal instructions and advise from the 'search' facilty here and a couple of questions pre install of Avast Home, have run trouble free with this superb prog.

If you can't get satisfaction from this board then you must be struggling!!

Best of luck with your proceedings.

Cheers  ;) lovelyperson

Thanks for all the input, have removed everything I can find but using "search for files" and using Symantec as subject there are still 7 files remaining, is it safe to just delete these or will I cause a catastrophe?? By the way at this moment Avast seems to be running ok.

1. Before removing any key, backup (save) them!
2. Can you post the path, name and value of these keys? We can only be sure if you do so.
3. Do you have any other Symantec product in your system?

Thanks for all your input but after doing the things all you helpful people suggested the programme worked well for 3 days the guess what........RPC Errors again. There must be a fault with the basic programme somewhere looking at all the references to this very problem in the forum. I believe it is time to give up and find a superior product. Thanks to you all anyway!!

I believe the problem is not on avast! but in any other program you're using and it's disabling or messing the antivirus installation.
Do you use PrevX, for instance?  ::)
