As this is only happening with Avast, it is likely that they do something that gets our update checks from GMPInstallManager.jsm stuck or makes them throw in an unexpected place.

I did so and no crash.I had to disable Add-on Update Checker as that triggers update checks on the OpenH264 plugin, which I wouldn't have thought.Does Firefox 34 beta have this plugin? It is installed by Firefox 33 update or clean install.
@ Goher John,I'm currently on a different computer. 33.01 crashes after closing FF.I'm installing version 34 (Aurora) now. will let you know when it's up and running.

Yes the silence is deafening from avast and firefox. I can't even find 33.0.1 on firefox site at all.

@bob, IE 9 is the last IE released for Vista, and still supported For Windows 7 until Jan 2016. However, I thought https scan wasn't included in Vista though?
