Avast Folder Size
« on: October 24, 2014, 04:28:22 AM »
My Avast folder size (in Program Files) is 372 MB.
I don't have any of the extra tool installed. Only the basic 3 shields.
In previous versions, Avast folder size would grow after updating the viruses list and reduce in about 50 MB after rebooting.
With the latest version, the folder size remains the same after rebooting.

I'd appreciate your help.

My "C:\Program Files\AVAST Software" is up to 577 MB at the moment.  I know it was under 500 MB as of this morning.

I'm not hurting for free space (as apparently you are).  However, I'm also curious about when it will clean up after itself, as you are.

Thank you essexboy.

As the folder is so large I would recommend a clean install to remove everything and start afresh :)

Download Avast Uninstall Utility to your Desktop.
Download the correct version of Avast
Avast Free
Avast Pro
Avast Internet Security
Avast Premier
Disconnect from the net
Uninstall Avast via control panel

  • Run the uninstall tool and accept the reboot to safe mode
  • Once complete reboot your system
  • Reinstall Avast

My folder is at about 399mb and I don't have any extras installed either.  If you are so tight on space as to be worried about megabytes might I recommend running wise cleaner and ccleaner and especially focus on the windows updates in wise cleaner... that'll clear out about 1.5 gigs

Plus gargantuan SSDs aren't break the bank expensive any more.

Mine seems to have stabilized at 578 MB.

A regular uninstall first, and then Avast uninstall tool. Is that correct?

I don't mind the extra 50 MB. My purpose in posting the question was to make sure there was no bug relating to cleaning up.
Does that seem OK?

This really isn't that unusual, the installation file is highly compressed, when unpacked it is going to be of this order.

My avast free installation/program folder is currently 408MB and this fluctuates after avast VPS updates and avast housekeeping.

The largest folder is likely to be the setup folder as that has integrity checking (copies of files, etc.) and defs sub-folder, the virus definitions one sub folder of defs containing the unpacked virus definitions database is of the order of 80MB.

As you can see these two folders take up the lions share of the 372MB you mentioned and that isn't including the other sub-folders. So I don't think that you are likely to gain much from a clean install.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Thank you David. I appreciate it.
As I've mentioned: with Avast 9, the folder size was about 320 MB, and now it's 370 MB.
Is that normal? And what might be those extra 50 MB?

Defs are about half the used space.  Definitions folders come and go without reboots as far as I know.

Note also that the items in the setup subfolder are normally created compressed to minimize their footprint.
