Try restarting and then using "use last known good configuration."

My Father has a system running XP that Avast will not allow to boot up as well, but when the Avast service is disabled, the system boots just fine!
How is that helpful ? How does that protect the computer ?

It doesn't protect the computer, but it does get it starter back up, since the Avast program halts the Windows XP loading sequence in its tracks.

Attached is the FRST.txt that I created just minutes ago. I won't be touching the computer at all until I hear back from you guys. Thanks again!

OK initially I will try to reset the registry, if that fails I will strip both antiviruses

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press fix
On completion reboot and let me know how that goes

FWIW, I am using system restore to use FRST. Does Windows know enough to keep on using this checkpoint when it restarts/reboots?

Black screen. Cursor in the middle. Why is Windows A-OK to go to system restore but fail on restart?

Fix log attached.

Are you running the computer from safe mode as Avast self protection is still active

No. I assume I should run FRST in safe mode, then?

Can you get into safe mode ?

I don't know. I'll try. If successful, run FRST fix in safe mode?

When I try to restart in safe mode, it freezes at aswRvrt.sys for forty seconds or so and loads to cursor and black screen.
