Update popups no longer shows after 2015 update
« on: October 28, 2014, 05:10:48 PM »
So ever since I updated to the latest version I am no longer seeing the Update popup whenever it updates automatically and it is happening on two of my computers both running Windows 7 Ultimate (32bit and 64bit). I tried changing the delay time but it still wouldn't appear. How do I fix this?

Rumor has it they've been removed on purpose, because they mislead you into thinking updates aren't occurring all the time (which they are via the "streaming updates" feature).  Sometimes overzealous helpers might make up rationalizations for "bugs" as "features" though.  I don't recall seeing an official word on it.

I still would like to be able to control if I wanna see my popups or not. And I like to be informed when avast has updated it's definitions. It kind of is a bother to go all the way deep in the settings just to see if it's the latest definition because it no longer shows which version you have if you hover the avast logo on the task bar and even on the main ui window when you open up avast.

There has been confirmation from an avast team member about the removal of the auto update notification popup. Though I didn't bookmark it.

It has to do with receiving in the order of 100+ streaming update per day that when the update notification you are up to date, etc. when streaming updates will still be released after VPS updates.

Personally I think that these should be restored and give the option to disable them as it was in the past. This for many was a reassurance that things are relatively OK and working, etc.

A case in point for me I haven't seen a single streaming update since updating to 10.0.2206 so with no update notifications you have to physically check to see if you are getting streaming updates and or VPS updates.

+1 It's too quiet...

It's a pain to drill down and see if it's updated.

You cant even hover over the system tray icon and see what version it is either...

They should address this with bringing back pop ups and the sysgem tray hover (show last updated date and time if nothing else)

They are planning a review of the right click menu of the tray icon (no time frame given); hopefully it will give greater access to useful items that are otherwise buried in the UI.

Hopefully one of those would be an easier access to the settings if they're planning on removing the automatic update popup permanently. And also bringing back the old hover notification wouldn't be so bad instead of the simple "You are protected"

Agreed the 'You are protected' isn't very informative. But that is what XP (and Vista I think) users have had for ages, but on my win7 netbook the VPS version information was very useful/informative.

The old hover notification was very helpful. What could possibly be the reason for changing it?

As an avast user not employee, I can't guess what they were thinking when they took that decision.

It would be better if they restored the pop-ups completely.
As a user if you didn't want to see them you could manually untick the box.
Myself I have created a desktop shortcut so I could check and be sure I'm getting the vps updates.

I know, from what I've seen here on the forums, that some users want the pop-ups while
others do not. Having the option is best. Let the user choose.

Given that many people disabled the auto update notification as on occasion these got piggybacked with promotions/ads/offers, etc. etc. so we have to be careful what we ask for ;D

Comes to mind:  "That's not a feature, it's a bug".

Of course Avast themselves would say it was changed on purpose, and that it's a feature.

If it WAS changed on purpose, it seems kind of odd that the "Show notification box after automatic update" checkbox should still be there, don't you think?

Seems to me to be similar to the "feature" where the UI pops open after a scan, even though the checkbox is not set to instruct the product to do that.

Is the product development getting somewhat out of control?

Well this is the post about it being removed.
No auto update notifications in avast 2015 - see https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=157589.msg1138441#msg1138441.

I believed you.  I'm not sure I believe Martin's statement though...

There seem to be two possibilities to me:

1.  They DID remove it on purpose and they're not competent enough to change a simple form to remove a checkbox that instructs the software to do something it can no longer do.

2.  They DIDN'T remove it on purpose but have a new bug, and for whatever reason are trying to cover it up as an intentional feature...  Which implies what?  That they're not competent enough to fix a basic bug?  That they're not interested in telling us the truth for some reason?

There is a third, distant possibility, which sometimes happens with big software corporations where software development has gotten out of control...

3.  One hand doesn't know what the other is doing.  In this situation sometimes employees do or say things that aren't right.  Usually there are also Marketing people involved, and their sole purpose in life is to confuse people for the purposes of financial gain for the company.  They tend also to confuse the employees.

I'm not sure which of the above alternatives I find more disturbing.  I mentioned the "pop up the UI after scan" bug in my earlier post because it tends to support theories 2 and/or 3 above more than 1.
