Nothing.

If Avast truly does nothing when clicking on the 'X' in the upper right corner, then that sounds exactly like 'Ignore Once' functionality.

I've sent the question to Avast to hopefully get an answer.

Why is it so hard for you to understand that when you click on the X, you are simply closing the notification box.
It does nothing else. It's the same as clicking the x on most notification messages.

Interestingly, the 'No Action' option was not available.  Odd.  When set to ask, is pressing the 'X' in the upper right corner the same as "ignore this one time only?".  If not, what does it do?  I understand that it closes the window, but what else happens?

The No Action is a selection/option at the upper level of File Shield > Actions setting and NOT in the Ask list of options, for the reasons previously mentioned.

The only option that essentially leaves the file alone, in place (but won't let run) is Block - Interestingly you get a link to report the file as a false positive no matter which choice you make. You would still have to create an exclusion to have it run.

As has been said X'ing out the window does 'only' that closes the window (the windows default action, nothing more).

Bob, you obviously have socialization issues.  Beginning a post with "Why is it so hard for you to understand" is rude.  The fact that you don't understand that is telling.

Thank you.  That clears it up.

The answer unfortunately still isn't what you would like to hear and it's something you don't seem to want to understand.
How else you you like me to phrase the reply ?
At this point, it's really water under the bridge.
The answer isn't going to change.

The default action which, unless changed by the user, is to put the file into the virus chest.

If you are unable to stay away from threads, even when asked very politely, there is little choice except to report you to the moderators for abuse.

That's your option. All I've done was answer your question even if you're not satisfied with the answer.

And what action does Avast then take once the window is closed?

My thoughts on this matter (as an avast user), because you had previously selected Ask, in order to get into this state (Ask - awaiting a user input), if you X out the window, avast essentially would have been waiting for an input that didn't come. The file wouldn't be allowed to run and I don't know if avast would have taken the default action if Ask is your first Action.

Normally if you have Ask as a first action, you have two others, 2nd and 3rd - these additional options are usual If conditions - if option 1 fails, then option 2, if option 2 fails, then option 3.

I only have two options set - Ask (if fails) No Action. In doing this because you have set No Action as a 2nd action there is no 3rd option.

A lot would depend on the three (or even two) settings you have set, the order and what was actually being done, copy, execute, etc.

To get the avast to alert and capture the images I used the eicar.com file and copied from an excluded folder into a data folder - X'ing out of the Ask window resulted in the file being copied not placed in the chest. This isn't the same as executing a file in place (not copied) so presumably that file would remain in place not moved.

I did try an avast file, autsandboxme2.exe, an old file designed to test the autosandbox function (pre-avast10), unfortunately that triggered the Hardened Mode - so ended my little test.

That's helpful.  Thank you.  Interestingly, it doesn't look like Avast prevented anything from running.  The program installed fully on that system as if Avast was not present.  In that particular case, that was a good thing, as it was a false positive by Avast.

Normally if you have Ask as a first action, you have two others, 2nd and 3rd - these additional options are usual If conditions - if option 1 fails, then option 2, if option 2 fails, then option 3.

In that particular case, and on that particular system, and at that moment in time, it was set to Ask / Ask / Ask.

That's very useful testing.  Thank you.
