Sorry but the Webshield is probably the most important shield in Avast.
Turning it off leaves you vulnerable while on the internet since you've in essence disable the part that monitors online traffic.
As David said, your machine, your choice. Certainly not one I'd ever make.

I disagree with you on this one. When it comes to being safe online, you're the only one that can do that. If you're trusting a program to keep you safe there you're going to be disappointed.

It is nice to have a little extra protection here and there, but as I already mentioned above k9 and other services also provide help in this area. I really don't understand this unilateral desire to trust Avast to stop all bad things from happening. It cannot do that. Nothing can do that.

If you are careful with where you go and what you choose to accept onto your computer, Avast will only rarely need to jump in and help you catch something. If you're not, having Avast won't do you any good.

Since today's "safe" site can be compromised at any time and tomorrow infect your computer, your disagreement isn't quite accurate.
It helps to be careful but that alone is only part of what it takes.
You also need to accept the fact that the best protection and the most careful user can still fall victim to brand new malware for which there isn't yet any protection.

At this point you're just misquoting me and spreading fear to pretend the internet is far more dangerous than it is.

Moving back to the point of this thread, are there any updates on getting this fix out? It's been a while since your statement on finding the problem and I'd certainly appreciate any updates on when you think it might get pushed out. Thank you!

Where are you "misquoted" ???
As stated before, your computer your choice. Certainly not mine.

Possibly removing "Grimefigher" might help regarding the "freezing" for some people (it appears to have possibly helped for me at leasat so far).  Ever since I was forced to upgrade to Avast2014 (my version at the time was reportedly no longer supported so Avast updated regardless of the fact I am set to NOT update the program version) I've been having issues with my browser (FF) locking up that can usually be freed up by clicking on the "windows start" button (WIN7).  But occasionally I've had to resort to aborting the FF process via System Manager.

Finally a few days ago it was frozen enough like it is occasionally to have to stop the FF process.  So before launching FF again, I brainstormed the idea since I'm getting tired of getting "Grimefighter" POPUPS anyway and possibly since it appears "Grimefighter" is checking my system anyway even though I do not use this option (based on the POPUP recommendation I get from Avast that would presume that clearly something behind the scenes is being done to get my computer's information in the first place to suggest a recommendation to use "Grimefighter") maybe I can try removing "Grimefighter" from Avast altogether and it might solve the freezing. Thinking at the very least I can reduce the ads to one less POPUP if nothing else I removed "Grimefighter" and "restored" FF as it was (which would typically lock up again in the past when using "restore" to the previous browser) and after that FF did not lock up after extended use of the "restored" FF browser from before.

And now for the past 2 days no more freezing, so perhaps just what "Grimefighter" does on it's own when occasionally checking the system even if a user has not activated the Avast option can possibly contribute to freezing. All I can say is that I'm happy so far to not see the "freezing" issue occur again since removing the option from my Avast2014 GUI interface.

Now not only am I very pleased to not be freezing anymore the past 2 days so far but I have the added bonus of only putting up with the "Seasonal Sale" POPUP several times a day presumably (along with some others, but thankfully no more "Grimefighter" ads), yea!!!  (my wife thanks me as well, since she has been increasingly irritated by an ad for something she would never want and even more so because of the continual ads I might add, pardon the pun).

For those not using "Grimefighter" anyway and are having "freeze" problems like myself this can be simply done by going to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Avast > Change > Untick "Grimefigher" and continue to update.

I thank Avast for the ability to reduce the application overhead by giving users the ability to remove at least some of the option(s) (that in this case apparently does produce overhead by doing some level of processing to check the system in order to push the POPUP with the ad recommendations in this case) that for some people would otherwise be considered a totally superfluous Avast option that a user would have no interest in using in the first place.

If anyone else has success with this approach the be sure and report back.

Maybe you need to update to the latest version. NG problems have been addressed in the latest version.

Is this true? Has there been an update that has fixed this problem? I have long since uninstalled Avast!, and I don't want to reinstall it unless I know for sure that this has been resolved... can anyone confirm who is running windows 8.1 and K9 web protection & Avast! all at the same time?

Well, I'm using the most uptodate version of Avast on both a Windows 7 and a Windows 8.1, and both are still Blue Screening every now and then (Obviously except if the Wb Shield is turned off).

That's a very very bad thing, and I cannot understand why Avast do not take this think serious! I know a dozen people that so far changed Antivirus to Bitdefender because of this problem.

Please address it and get it resolved.

 ???GOT A LAPTOP?
FREEZING is CAUSED BY OVERHEATING
OVERHEATING is caused by OBSTRUCTED AIRFLOW (at the narrow metal slots of the exit port)
A NEW VIRUS INSTALL causes EXTRA HEAT (using the CPU to scan webpages etc.)

SOLUTION your laptop needs a good cleaning. Use a can of air through the side port (ESSENTIAL to disloging the dust going BACKWARDS) WHILE sucking through the bottom inlet grill with a strong vacuum. I actually cut away the grill with a dremmel and a diamond wheel to do this better, but YMMV.

HOW TO TEST -
1. You should feel a strong airflow breeze out the side port.
2. Get SPEEDFAN (Windows) - it's a great freeware tool that does a lot of sensor-based control work in one simple interface. You can watch the overheating cores, and other sensors - when they hit a certain temperature your system self-arrests - completely freezes. It doesn't shut down or produce a warning.
    You can also set preset temperatures to give you a warning and take various actions automatically.

@ Ion-Christopher,
Welcome to the forum, :)
Posting in old topics really isn't very helpful and only revives something that's no longer an issue.

My current guess is the system lockups while web browsing seems to tie into 32bit systems.

My system is 32bit Vista duo core 2g ram and ever since I updated to Avast 10.3.2223 I have had system lockups when browsing. After updating to 10.3.2225 my system still had lockups when browsing. I uninstalled the virtual machine service and still had lockups when browsing.  I did a clean install using avast cleaner in safe mode and still had lockups when browsing.

I went back to avast program version 10.2.2215 downloaded from link below. Did a clean install using avast cleaner in safe mode and also uninstalled the virtual machine service. So far it has been 48 hours of operation with no lockups while browsing.

It's not a fix but at least until Avast gets fixed it is a work around.

It happened to me 4 times since July 30th 2015. Every single time Firefox was opened with more than one tab. Two times I was on the Steam website checking/loading the pages of some games, these pages have videos that automatically play.

I noticed that since around middle July (I can't remember exactly when) Avast takes a LOT of CPU for scanning internet pages. It may related to the freeze. I've read that this increase in CPU usage started after 2218: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=174991.0

I already tried repairing Avast and rebooting but the freeze happened again. In the options I've all the sensibilities to the max: this should only matter for false positives but I'm telling just in case.

I have:
- Windows XP SP3 32 bit;
- Avast Free Antivirus 10.3.2225 (it happened also with 2223);
- Firefox 40.0 (updated today, it happened also with 39.0);
- Adblock Plus 2.6.10.

I don't have K9.

Please, help me, it's really aggravating. I love Avast and I don't want to change it. Are there news on the subject? I would like to know if they're working on it so I can wait a few days, otherwise I would be obliged to get another antivirus.

I've read that some users installed an old version of Avast, like 2014, and they resolved it. Is it safe? Where can I get a good version?

Many thanks in advance.
