How much ram does your system have ??? Is the video card using part of that rem ???
I have 2 GB of RAM.
How can I know if the video card uses the RAM?

I've read that some users installed an old version of Avast, like 2014, and they resolved it. Is it safe? Where can I get a good version?

Many thanks in advance.

Bender01,
I'm running Avast Free on a Vista 32 bit machine and I noticed that the freezing/lockups started with 2015.10.3.2223. I tried rolling back my graphics driver, Firefox, Windows Updates, and Flash Player but I still got the lockups.

I then rolled back to Avast Free 2015.10.2.2215 and the lockups stopped completely. You can download the old version at oldapps.com.

I have now reinstalled everything except Avast to it's latest version and my machine is still running stable. I suggest that you download 2015.2.2215 and avastclear.exe, uninstall 2015.10.3.2225, run avastclear, then install 2015.10.2.2215.

PS, Last weekend, I accidentally updated Avast to the latest version and my Vista machine froze/locked up within 5 minutes. Now waiting/hoping the next version of Avast fixes this problem.

I did everything (avastclear in safe mode like written on the Avast site) but it's still the 10.3.2225.  :-\ Should I have changed the option for not autoupdating before the uninstall...? I don't think the option is saved but who knows. After the new install, the option was already on "Ask when the update is downloaded", so it shouldn't be that the problem.

Also, I downloaded the 2215 from FileHippo: http://filehippo.com/it/download_avast_antivirus/60493/
because from Oldapps after clicking on the download link I was redirected to download-euro.oldapps.com and Firefox gave me a red alert saying that the website has been reported for containing unwanted sofware: http://download-euro.oldapps.com/Avast/avast_free_antivirus_setup10.2.2215.exe

How can I get the 2215 version?

Like I said, I installed the 2215 from FileHippo but at the end I still got the 2225. Did it update during the installation? Should I have disconnected the internet cable?

I didn't post a link to FileHippo. Did you even take a look at what's offered in the link I posted ???

I already visited that page when I tried to install it but, like I already said two posts ago, when I click on the download Firefox blocks the new page saying that it contains unwanted software. Screenshot: http://i57.tinypic.com/jgpm4g.jpg

What's the problem with the one on FileHippo?

I'm not freezing, but I'm hitching badly while browsing, even with the avast protection plugin disabled.  Looking at the specs for other computers that are locking up completely, I think my build is the only thing that's making it a hitch rather than a complete freeze (8 core processor).  Was NOT getting this before.  Avast REALLY needs to comment here or they may be losing an auto-renewing account.  Been using Avast since XP and the lack of response to a bug being reported is very disheartening.

Note - for trying to download older versions - some sites despite them offering older version number some still download the latest version.

Others might offer the on-line installation file or not tell you it is the on-line installation file. This is only about 5Mb, this is a stub installer and that downloads and installs the latest version, whatever that happens to be.

FileHippo is linked to the latest version. They don't change the file name quick enough to show it.

Hey - It may be an old thread but they still show up in searches. And the problem has NEVER gone away. Here are two more causes, by class:

Highest-probability is that some browser plugin / extension is running headlong into Avast code under the blanket - this might be a memory manager or something like that. To troubleshoot this issue try starting your browser in safe mode - no add-ins. Start there, because it's a high bet. Then look closer if it works. This means that Avast has not got every buggy or incompatible plug-in covered in their self-check. Not a big deal - if you run this check. AVAST SHOULD RECOMMEND IT - now they just did (indirectly) :8)

The second possibility is a long shot - but it's with a driver conflict. You'll find that video drivers are the old #1 problem - especially if it's video that is locking (screen freezes but no reboot or BSD.)

NOTE no errors or alerts are reported in any of these 3 (including the over-temp, above) because it's under-the-blanket of the O.S. and reporting system.

THANKS - people will!

Just updated my 2015.10.2.2218 Free to 2015.10.4.2233 Free and within a hour my Vista machine froze and locked just as it has with every version after 2218. Screen is frozen, no response from keyboard or mouse, & no hard drive activity.
Hard reboot with power switch into SafeMode.
Uninstalled and cleaned version 2233.
Reinstalled version 2218.
Operating normally again.

Intel 925 duo core vista 32bit with 2GB ram. Having lockups where the computer just stops responding while browsing, no HDD activity, the keyboard and mouse no longer responding, whatever is on the display remains, and clock stops indicating time advancing. Power boot to get computer back. I have again gone back to version 2015.10.2.2218. When I installed 2015 R4 (2015.10.4.2233) scan disk was working and only after 3 days of use did the computer lockup while browsing. This new version seems to have the same browsing lockup problem as did the previous version AVAST 2015 R3 SP1 (2015.10.3.2225). I have not had this problem with version 2015.10.2.2218.

@ busp1
Please don't change the title when replying in a topic - anyone responding directly to your post would have that modified title and it can get confusing.

If you want to address someone, either use the user name or the quote option in the post or just use what you changed the title to as the first line of your post. "@ TSquare same here I also tried 2015.10.4.2233"

Since there are no fixes here that means avast is still broken for vista 32bit systems while browsing and has been broken since sometime in May 2015?
