VPSUPD Error Messages
« on: November 05, 2014, 05:41:04 PM »
I was running the downloaded version of vpsupd.exe and got the follow error message in a dialog box:

Can't install VPS update.  Please, report following errorcodes:
Ver:7.0.1474
SI: 0x00000005
ST: 0x20000011
LE: 0x00000000

Now what do I do? How do I update my copy of Avast!?

I believe I did use the correct revision of the updater.  Wouldn't the updater be smart enough to notify the user that it can't update a particular version?

What do the error codes mean, I see that many folks post them here.  Is there a decoder ring to translate them?

Those error codes seems to be from Windows and not avast

Tried google search?

Are you sure you downloaded the correct version for the installed avast version?

They aren't from windows, they are from avast, but I can't find anything in my notes to say what those codes mean.

In the past there was a check of the VPS Update and if the version was a paid version and the license wasn't good/banned then you would get an ST:0x2000001C code, that is the only one I made a note of.

I had just renewed my free version.  Maybe that 0x20000011 reported was sensitive to the fresh activation.  Perhaps it takes a little while to sink in .

I'll download another copy before I try again.  Thanks for the help and wish me luck.

It may be best to try a clean reinstall, uninstall using normal add remove programs or Programs and features and then also use the uninstall utility, avast_clean.exe, before reinstalling.

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
Download and save this before uninstalling the existing version.

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Download and save this after the normal uninstall, reboot and Run this from normal windows - it will seek to run in safe mode - answer yes and it will handle booting into safe mode.
