Can't see the "Ball" in the notification area

In the old version of Avast, the ball (with the "a") appeared in the notification area. With this version (4.6), it does not. I have no idea whether the AV is on or not. How do I make it show up and pop up every time I start the computer?

Hello there, welcome to this board.

Already used the search option on this board?
A lot of (possible) solutions to this are already given.

If the ball is not there, it means Avast is not properly working.
Have you already rebooted the system?
What OS are you using?
Already tried a repair of Avast?
Are the services running?

I did reboot the system.
I am using Windows XP, Home Edition.
I am notaware of "repair" od Avast and how to accomplish it.
I am not sure what "services" are supposed to run or how to start them...

start > control panel > software > add/remove > Avast > change/delete > repair
Give that a try.

You can repair avast! from add/remove programs(you can find it  in control panel too).Choose avast!->>repair

In task menager you should see:
ashDisp.exe
ashServ.exe
aswUpdSv.exe
ashWebSv.exe
ashMailSv.exe
Maybe some other processes but the other should help you too! ;)

Do you have any other security software installed? Spy Sweeper for instance, as this previously falsely detected ashDisp.exe, deleting it and reference to it. If so restore the deletion in spy sweeper and update the signature files for it.

If not I doubt that the repair (you have to be on-line) will restore the icon so you may have to try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.

Thank you all, guys. I went through your suggestions and was ablr to get the ball to show in the notification area after exercising the "services" (I am not sure which one did the trick). However, when I restarted the computer, the ball disappeared again. This never happened to me with the earlier version.
The only security SW I am running is Zone Alarm. I disabled it and it didn't help either...
Any other suggestions? If not, I guess I'll remove and reinstall Avast and hope for the best.

After exercising the "services" (I am not sure which one did the trick).
There are 4 avast! services:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service) must have an AUTOMATIC start.
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner) could be started in MANUAL mode.
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service), MANUAL start.
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service), AUTOMATIC start.

How did you let them there?
Do you use (have) any other antivirus in your computer?

I just double clicked on each one of them sequentially
I have only the Microsoft Anti Spyware, in addition to Avast. I also have Zone Alarm. However, I had all of these when I used the older version of Avast and had no such trouble.

Well guys, I became tired of chasing ghosts and decided to remove the installation from my computer and start from scratch: i.e., downloading a fresh file and installing it. And, no surprise, all is well and working OK, including the ball in the notification area...! Sorry I caused so much trouble to you and your efforts to help are really appreciated.
