I upgraded my avast 2014 internet security suite to the newer 2015 version, and was fine for awhile....until I shut down my computer and restarted it the next day. My brand new computer slowed to a crawl. What normally takes half a second (such as clicking and executing volume control/adjuster) now takes 10 seconds. I made sure it is avast causing the problem by uninstalling, re-installing, and using system restore.  Sure enough, when avast is gone from my computer everything returned to normal, and when I re-installed it, my computer turned to mush. This is a major headache.  I've been using avast for 4 years, and now it looks like I'll need to turn to another antivirus software.
Using System Restore doesn't really properly restore Avast unless you created the restore point while the Self Defense module in Avast was turned off.
The Self Defense module must also be off when you restore that Restore point.
The safest thing to do is to do a clean install of Avast by totally removing it including using the Avast removal tool then re-installing avast.

Since installing 2208 the AVAST help feature is inaccessible. Clicking the questionmark on no matter what subject results in "file not found"

Working as expected here - how did you install 2208 ?

Try an avast Repair - Control Panel > Programs & Features > Avast Antivirus - Change - now select Repair and Continue.

If that doesn't resolve it and you installed 2208 over the top of 2206 - then a clean reinstall would be the next step.

@bob3160......this is interesting info.
So even if you turn off Self Defense Module in Avast before you select a system restore Avast does not work (ie. come back all in good order) in that system restore process unless the Restore Pt had been taken with this off too ?
Also, on a System Restore besides SDM....I though you need to disable shields as well ?......not 100% sure so wanted to check.
To be honest, I think the subject of Avast and System Restore guidelines may be good subject for one of your videos.

I did try uninstalling and re-installing. The second time I re-installed it was no better than the first. My computer became extremely slow, laggy and glitchy.  Any other pointers? It's a real shame now I need to turn to other antivirus options, because I really liked avast before this problem.

I did miss it....thx !  .....starting to look at all your videos.

Do you keep a list on your blog of just Avast videos with summary names ? ....I see a bunch of videos of intermixed topics.
I keep pointing people to your clean uninstall link (sure beats typing it out each time in threads)....would be nice to include link to a Avast "specific" list of FAQ/Instructional videos.

When you installed what "TOOLS" did you install ?
Did you do CUSTOM install and select or de-select items ? http://bob3160.blogspot.com/2014/10/avast-2015.html
If you read many posts NG is one that can consume a lot of resources.
The other is HTTPS scanning (but in 2208 version supposed to be improved).
So, to test out you can go into Avast in your PC's Programs & Features and do a CHANGE and uninstall NG function.
When you reboot go into Avast User Console and in Web Shield Settings uncheck HTTPS scanning.
Those two seem to be the biggest system hit....try without them and see if this makes difference.

There are SO many better experts on this Forum to answer that question.....so hopefully I will not miss-represent...but at a VERY HIGH summary it is a new "virtualization" environment that is implemented in Avast 2015 that allows it to isolate and test potential threats before they get a chance to even be on your PC's native environment......IMHO a great idea. However, this virtualization (ie. NG) takes a lot of resources on a PC....many have been OK, some only at boot time see slow down, some seem to have prolonged issues......but since NG is new and there is really no definitive way to know what else may be causing PC "performance" issues you can only speculate that if a PC was fine before with 2014 and not with 2015 that it is worth a try to uninstall NG component (check mark in TOOLS section of installer) and also HTTPS Scanning (check box in Avast UI in Web Shield Settings) and see if this makes dramatic impact.  Just reading the various posts since 2015 was released these two items seem to be the major contributors to any effects on PC performance. Hope that clarifies.

I have more sinister symptoms to report....giving Avast yet another chance I re-installed it.  Rebooting my computer now takes 10 minutes.  It processes, freezes, processes and freezes.  When I click on the volume control, it now takes a whole minute to come up.  It's not just laggy and glitchy, I'm talking major, makes you want to kill something kind of lag.  I scanned using malwarebytes and hitmanpro, both of which turned up nothing for malware.  I did a system restore (getting rid of avast), and everything returned to normal. User TheKochs mentioned turning off https and NG, but will those two functions cause my computer to exhibit the symptoms I'm having?

Hi, folks. I have now updated to the latest version of Avast 2015 (141111) and I've suddenly started having issues with the HTML5 player for Youtube. What I've noticed is that the issue will go away as soon as I disable Avast's Web Shield. Is there a way to stop Avast from obstructing HTML5 without having to disable the Web Shield? Thanks in advance for any replies.

avast! detects https eicar files with Internet Explorer, but not with Firefox or Opera.

Tried the repair as well as the clean install. No cure, no help information is available.
Any other solution?

For me it's working as it should.

WebShield blocked eicar with https / Firefox.
