Lastest Windows Update Problems
« on: November 18, 2014, 11:57:08 PM »
I am running IS 2015 (Latest version)

I was prompted (As normal) to install the latest security updates, KB3000850 & KB3011780.
After the reboot my PC was pretty much unresponsive, loads of apps not opening system hung on restart.
Booted up in Safe Mode and all is ok.

I tried a few things and came to the conclusion it was Avast, so I uninstalled it.
After the reboot it worked fine.
Tested uninstalling it and re-installing it.
Basically when installed I have problems, uninstalling Avast and all is ok.

The 2 updates where:
Security Update for Windows 8.1 (KB3011780) 1MB
Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3000850) 711MB
Both released 17.11.2014

Any ideas why these updates are causing me these problems?

Same here, on 2 different PCs.
Some apps do not start / take forever, including many Control Panel items (admin cmd, device manager, uninstall software etc.)
And most notably the System will not shut down. It just displays shutting down and loops forever.

Using avast cleaner to remove avast fixed everything, reinstalling it reintroduced the same problems.

Absolutely the issues I am having.
Did you install both updates?

I expect it is KB3000850 that is the problem as this is the big update.

I also have an Avast member with the same problem in the Spanish forum. Installed kb 3000850 and system crawls and Avast bogged down.

I had one update today that I installed, (KB3011780), no problems so far. Seeing that I am not running Avast maybe Avast has a problem with this update.

Reading all posts above. The problem ocurred with kb 3000850 which, it seems, was an optional update. I can not say much about it since I do not run Win 8.1. I am just confirming that there is another Avast user in a similar situation after installing the same KB.

Was about to install KB3000850 too.  Anyone tried to do a system restore and see if the problem still occurs?  Windows should automatically create a safe state before installing updates.

Wow, hard to tell....seems others having install issues with this on the web.....not necessarily Avast.
However, here is what happened tonight for me.....have five home PCs....all W7 64bit, latest everything, KB3011780 pops up on them.
So on one PC I still have Avast 9.0.2021 I hit install on the KB...it installed and asked for reboot.....which I then got the "Do Not Turn Off PC Windows is Configuring"........sat there for an hour !!!!!!!  So......I did HARD reset with power button and reboot....asked me for boot options and I chose Normal Startup.....Windows Logo and then message on registry updates happening.....took five minutes.....then to login screen.....which had black screen prior for 2-3 minutes....and after login took 3-5 minutes to settle.......all this on a very fast machine.  Did a reboot and all seems OK...Avast 9 stable....all programs seem to run (Office, IE11, Firefox, some other utils I tried, etc.).

So, did same thing above to another PC with Avast 2015/2028 and same "hang" scenario as above.....luckily stable now.

So, on 3rd machine I uninstalled Avast 9 and Avast cleaner then did MS update.
Not only did it not hang the install (config) took only few minutes then reboot.  :)

Any chance Avast's Self Defense Module (Avast 2014 & 2015) is hanging this ?  ???
While the update itself was on few MB in size I did some reading and this update is very intrusive into the O/S.

Just to repeat the problem update is optional update KB3000850 exclusively for Windows 8.1 machines.  Not the critical security update KB3011780 which is for every Windows.

Doesn't appear that way. Read Reply #9

I strongly believe it is KB3000850 that is the problem.

I have a work laptop running the same OS (W8.1).
I installed the 1MB security update (KB3011780) no problems at all.

I won't attempt KB3000850 as I believe this give me the same problems as my other PC experienced.

Hi,

installed these 2 updates yesterday and my PC is not shutting down/restarting properly.
So it might be related to Avast software....

I'm using Avast 2015 Free, latest version, at least yesterday :)
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit.

I will try reinstalling these updates without Avast in a few hours... let's see :)
