OK....first, I apologize if I slightly hijacked the thread since I was talking about KB3011780...however, misread and thought you had issues there too.  However, perhaps my solution can help on your other KB concern.

Today I did two more PC updates.....same type laptops (DELL) with W7 64bit both MBAM Pro, CryptoPrevent and Avast.
One had V9/2014 & one V10/2015.
On BOTH I disabled (not uninstall) the MBAM & Avast shields......I also went into Avast UI and disabled the Self Defense Module.  I then disconnected Wifi from Internet and did the KB3011780 update (had downloaded prior so only install needed) and it installed very quickly, on re-reboot shutdown it configed in under minute, on reboot Windows finished config under a minute and system was VERY responsive/quick.  I re-enabled all shields and SDM.  All seems well.

I can also confirm here:
three PCs with Win 8.1 x64 running fine with KB3011780,
but all three won't shut down with KB3000850 anymore.
I also experience issus with some other processes as well.

I strongly believe it is KB3000850 that is the problem.

I have a work laptop running the same OS (W8.1).
I installed the 1MB security update (KB3011780) no problems at all.

I won't attempt KB3000850 as I believe this give me the same problems as my other PC experienced.

Hi,

installed these 2 updates yesterday and my PC is not shutting down/restarting properly.
So it might be related to Avast software....

I'm using Avast 2015 Free, latest version, at least yesterday :)
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit.

I will try reinstalling these updates without Avast in a few hours... let's see :)

I had same issue, uninstalling Avast and rebooting fixed ALL issues,ie no longer waits and waits at restart or shutdown,no lag or weird freezes,I tried Win8.1 with its Defender  and no issues after, then  decided to install Panda free version and again no issues,so seems related to those  Windows updates last night and Avast.

So the solution for me was to uninstall Avast and either use Defender  in Windows 8.1 or Panda free.

Another +1 here.

With fully updated Avast 2015 on task and a perfectly functioning system, I updated my test Windows 8.1 x64 Enterprise VM, including optional update KB3002340 (which is huge, and probably can be considered Windows 8.1.2) and it ended up completely borked, with an inability to search for things, broken menus, and popup messages like these attached.  Worst of all, I couldn't complete a reboot.

A full removal with the AvastClear tool cleared up the problem.

Per others in this thread, apparently attempts to reinstall the latest version return the system to a borked state, so I guess it's goodbye to Avast for the time being.

kb 3000850 is a rollup of Win 8.1 and since last Win 8.1 rollup, called also Spk 1, brought so many troubles, Microsoft decided to make this one optional.

This November update rollup also includes all previous updates since our last image update in April 2014. This is a convenient single step to bring Windows clients and servers up to date. Unlike our April update, the November update rollup is not required to be able to continue to receive security or other updates.

There is something it does not like Avast or it should be installed without Avast and then install Avast ::) but some Win8.1 and Avast users are found it to be troublesome :(

I assume out of the 200 Million Avast users there is a lot of them on Windows 8.x.  ;)
I luckily am on W7 still but I think it would be nice if Avast Team member responded to this thread.....seems a fairly important issue. :o  Can one of the Super Posters ping/PM the key Avast Team folks that review the Forum ?  ....I have no contacts else I would.

Don't worry I've seen a couple of them already reading the thread. A minute ago petr.chytil was doing it.

same to me with KB3000850 AND AVAST! installed.
It would be urgent that AVAST Support recognizes the problem. Otherwise a lot of people uninstall AVAST and wait until a fix exists.
Folks from AVAST, check it please

I to am running Avast and KB3000850 with 8.1. Stuck on rebooting since installing this update. I have ran sfc /scannow and all is fine according to system files.

Is the only solution to uninstall avast to clear up this issue? while things get fixed either Avast/ Microsofts end.

For KB3000850 on 8.1 has anyone tried to disable Avast Shields and also go into Avast UI under Settings>Troubleshooting and uncheck Self Defense Module........THEN try Windows Update.  You can re-enable all this after reboot.

I would try and post but I'm all W7.

I tried reinstalling Avast from the standalone installer and it re-borked my system.

Avast 2015 (10.0.2208.712) is now fundamentally incompatible with Windows 8.1, fully updated with the latest optional update.

A.  Make sure you have the latest AvastClear for version 10 on hand.

B.  You'll need to run it without booting into Safe Mode first.

C.  You'll want to run it again in Safe Mode after the above restores rebootability.

Amazingly, everything else seems to work with the KB installed and Avast not.

Experienced Same issues, Mine hung on Preparing PC, don't turn off computer for over an hour, powered off, and restarted hard, and couldn't open Programs and Features, IE Window wouldn't work,  Skype wouldn't work on my 8.1 64bit with Media Center Machine.

Laptop couldn't access for a while Avast forum, so i ended up doing a full hard disk wipe, and starting full reload, Windows 7 64bit, then Windows 8.0, then finally if all goes well 8.1 Install via the app store, only way to do it for me, won't take my key any other way.

Will make room for image after all this on external drive, this is a major pain

Currently I have Avast 10.0.2208.712.
Uninstalled and reinstalled didn't work with Windows 8.1 64 updated.
What I've done.
  • using CCleaner uninstall (can't get normal uninstall to work).
  • using safemode avastclean.
  • removing vboxasw manually.
