After having seriously problems including having to press the button to get my notebook (win 8.1, 64 bit, avast free) because it would not shut down/go into hibernation or sleep mode + other issues like Avast failing to load when it should, generally acting sleepy, etc, I suspected one of the latest updates, esp. the huge optional one, 723MB(?).
This morning I went to the Windows updates page, located it & uninstalled it. fortunately, no further issues caused & I did not have any of some of the loss of data & other issues others seem to have had.
everything is working fine again.

I hope Avast informs users, for example in a pop-up alert Update, that the this major issue has been resolved, something all will know about & soon!

Regards

Hi.

Any news from Avast Support Team???

Are they working on a patch to fix the problem???

I would like to have both Windows update KB3000 and Avast installed in my system...

The fix is prepared and it is currently in last phases of testing in our quality department. Once the testing is done, it is going to be released as an EmUpdate. Please understand that we do not want to underestimate the testing, because the update introduces a change in one of Avast drivers.

Thank you all for your patience!

Will the fix also be in the new downloads?
I deleted Avast from my laptop and need to download it again.
But if the fix is not there, then why download it all again for a fresh ( and working ) avast install ?

Will the emergency update be pushed out to all users or just those running Win 8/8.1?

What is the latest on this? Read it on the news.

I installed in the timeframe of 1-2 days earlier this week two out of band updates from Microsoft and during those reboots Avast reported "2015". I didn't notice anything strange.

The out of band updates were

KB3011780 (the smaller one), and
KB3000850 (the 700-800 MiB range)

What are the symptoms I should look for?

FYI - after removing Avast, I had to repair Windows updates.
"sfc /scannow"  reported problems, but "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" could fix them... there were some corrupted files from the KB3000850 update.

When I came home an hour ago I checked for updates and there was an update available so I downloaded it. It was the update to the 2015 version so apparently I hadn't updated yet. Anyway avast needed to restart the pc to finish the update but it got stuck on "Restarting" as I knew it would, so I had to hold the power button down to turn it off. When powering on again, while booting into windows it said that there were problems and it was trying to repair windows. after a few seconds it said something about a dll file and that I could either continue or turn of the pc. So I turned it off and started it again and this time it started as normal. All the problems in Windows are still there of course but did anyone get something similar?

We have been able to simulate the problem in our lab and I think we fixed this issue. This Windows updates calls new memory related functions which are not fully compatible with avast. We'll prepare EmUpdate with the patched driver tomorrow morning (it means, all & new avast installations should be patched immediately, that's how it works).

Small extra clue about loss of data.

Shortcuts in /users/public/desktop survived.
(Perhaps these shortcuts were made by installers.)

Shortcuts in /users/username/desktop were dropped along with the data files.
(Perhaps these shortcuts were made by 'send-to-desktop'.)

Normally, that might be some kind of user profile problem.
In this case, the rest of the data in the profile seems OK.

Programmers will spot that /users/username/desktop just happens
to be the 'application path' from Avastclean.exe's point of view .

I cannot say for sure what happened - it's all over now - but I hope
they are taking a good look at the logic tree for the cleanup tool.
