So, who get's the credit for this KB3000850 botched Windows update..........Microsoft or Avast?

Mmmm ... credit. Does that mean a baseball bat to the leg is a credit crunch ?

@   petr.chytil and Avast Test Team,

The new version (after repairing the problem-cause) should indeed be tested very good... before releasing.
Many people have severe problems, and this should not happen again...

Also 2 Questions:

Should "any previous installed version" be removed using your tool, or will this new version install perfect on top of any older existing version? I am still using 2014 version  9.0.2021 now, and of corse being scared now of what could happen... Have 4 PC's to Update, and not being a specialist, gives me headache and sleepless nights...

Things like this are very stressfull for simple users...

As second question, stated as somebody proposed before...
Please, prepare also a free iso-file, which can be downloaded and used to create a bootable repairtool... including user manual
I supose this is only a small thing your programmers can do, to prevent more damage to Avast's Brand name, and a small compensation for the time lost by so many users...

In my opinion, there are a lot more who are not even aware of the existance of this forum.

After running this:

net stop wuauserv
cd %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution
ren Download Download.old
net start wuauserv
net stop bits
net start bits
net stop cryptsvc
cd %systemroot%\system32
ren catroot2 catroot2old
net start cryptsvc
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Get-Packages /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

The KB3000850 installed smoothly  ;)

I'm running optional update KB3000850 now on two systems with zero problems after having completely removed Avast.  That tends to point the finger to Avast.

But...

Did Microsoft make an early version of the update available beta testers/developers before rolling it out to the public, so that Avast engineering could test it?

Did Microsoft test with Avast installed themselves?  It's not like the base of Avast users is tiny.

Microsoft is clearly de-funding every program they have.  Windows 10 looks like the work of just one or two programmers.  Update roll-ups come out clearly without the in-depth testing they ought to have for major releases.

Who's at fault indeed.

Small extra clue about loss of data.

Shortcuts in /users/public/desktop survived.
(Perhaps these shortcuts were made by installers.)

Shortcuts in /users/username/desktop were dropped along with the data files.
(Perhaps these shortcuts were made by 'send-to-desktop'.)

Normally, that might be some kind of user profile problem.
In this case, the rest of the data in the profile seems OK.

Programmers will spot that /users/username/desktop just happens
to be the 'application path' from Avastclean.exe's point of view .

I cannot say for sure what happened - it's all over now - but I hope
they are taking a good look at the logic tree for the cleanup tool.

We have had something very similar happen.  We didn't use the Avast removal tool.  But one of our machines no longer has the users Desktop folder or Documents folder.  I mean they don't exist they are just gone.  I have ran 6 or 7 recovery programs and the files and folder just no longer exist.  This computer was the first that we had seen with this problem.  It was sluggish, couldn't get into certain control panel items, and of course wouldn't restart or shutdown.  Ran check disk and that's when things got worse and the files are gone.

Just thought I would throw this out there just because you aren't the one that has seen that.

In that case why does my windows 8.1.1 x64 run perfectly well after the update ? Is my Avast different ? Is my Windows different ?  Is my set up different ?

Chances are yes, something's different.  System speed, instruction set support, who knows?  You got lucky this time.  This is not an issue that only people with screwed up computers are having.

But isn't the point kind of moot already?  Avast has already said they've found and fixed the problem.

-Midnight, it kind of feels like being left out in the cold, but if you're re-enabled Windows Defender you're not exactly swinging in the breeze.

Avast tends to call attention to itself, to make you aware it's on the job, to make you feel safe, so when it's not there it's natural to feel vulnerable.  But don't worry; if it really bothers you don't surf to sites likely to deliver malware.

Or even better, adopt some new security practices that will help you.  Here are a couple as a suggestions:

1.  Research, then download and install the MVPS hosts file from this site:  http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm

2.  Reconfigure Internet Explorer not to run ActiveX from sites in the Internet Zone, and review all the IE Add-Ons you already have installed, eliminating those you don't know you need.

These two things alone arguably provide you more protection than just running Avast with a default system configuration, and as a side benefit will decrease the number of ads you see and increase your privacy protection while surfing online.

And, when you do get a new Avast on the job again, these things do not need to be undone.  They will continue to augment the protection.

For me, I uninstalled the security update until Avast solves the problem.

I feel the patch will be released as soon as they are 100% sure it is good
