If that particular update is so important why is it shown as optional?   I'm not going to risk almost destroying my computer again.

Maybe read here about it?

I'm far from an expert, but it seems to me one of its attributes is it makes it a lot easier to boot Windows 8.1 to Safe Mode... always an advantage when dealing with Avast snafus!

It's not important.  It's almost like a small service pack.  It contains prior fixes up to this point, bug fixes, and tweaks to the OS.  If prior Windows are any indications, MS will eventually make it a mandatory ("important") or trickle it down bit by bit, but in no way is it required.  If stability is your priority, it is better to wait until or these optional updates becomes "important," by then hopefully any bugs or conflicts are straightened out.

Windows 8.1 with KB3000850 has been working perfectly for me for 3 days since removing Avast.

It's a big update...  As was mentioned above, it's basically a service pack without any change to the version number.

The question is this:  Why wouldn't you want the latest update from Microsoft?  You have been trusting them up to this point to deliver updates to you that work.  Those of you considering not installing it - it's your choice, certainly, but moving forward, aren't you going to wonder whether you're falling out of the mainstream?  When new applications are developed, or even subsequent Windows Updates, do you think they'll have been better tested on a FULLY up to date system, or one where KB3000850 was left off?

The problem with this update has been with Avast, not with Microsoft.

Installed KB300850 via Windows update after the EMUpdate from Avast, even after a full clean install of the system myself on Tuesday/Wednesday, had it installed since the EMupdate fully arrived in my PC, no issues here happening, working fine, much better than Tuesday and Wednesday.    I'd rather be fully up to date, than not myself, for future patches, and features.

The big optional Windows 8.1 update just this August caused so many issues, MS pulled it.  MS even told people to uninstall it.  A month later they re released it with fixes of course.

What's your point?

They haven't pulled this one.

As far as I can tell, there's not a big outcry against KB3000850 (except here).

I already have KB300357 installed but I'm afraid to install KB3000850 again.   :-\

Same here.
Do not want to go back into all the troubles i have after the MS update with avast.
All MS updates are done, and my system works great ( and fast ), but what will it do with a new version of Avast?

I tried it and it worked

32-bit Win 8.1 Pro in a VM run with VMPlayer

Made sure that aswsnx.sys version is 10.0.2208.722

Downloaded the 3 fixes from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3000850 beforehand

First installed Windows8.1-KB3003057-x86.msu and rebooted

Attempted to install Windows8.1-KB3014442-x86.msu, said it was already installed

And then started Windows8.1-KB3000850-x86.msu, rebooted

and everything works fine.

Alievitan and NoelC are both right.

This update is important for forth coming updates. Many users like me have bought long time license from avast.
I want to install these updates and also keep avast in my computers.
We, users, don't create any issues on those products.
Microsoft and avast should work on it and give us best solution ASAP.

I would wait for 2 weeks to see those updates(including avast) are stable.
Everything will become better.

Appears a lot of people have had problems with this KB3000850 update.

Yes, and they were using Avast.  Avast has now fixed that problem.  The Microsoft thread is now irrelevant.

Not exactly...  Avast has now fixed that problem for v10 clients...  Unfortunately the business product is still using the v8 client so there are quite a few of us without a working solution.

seth.ad If you are able to boot into the computer and everything works then there was no problem on your system

Thanks, all's well for now.

in fact a thing that has been bugging me for months has disappeared:
Windows Action Center would falsely claim that both Avast virus and spyware/PUP protection are turned off
