@ nix.hard,
I had turned off the hardware acceleration in Avast a long time ago.  It seems to cause a lag in the OS when turned on.
(Hardware acceleration also causes a lag in Google's Chrome browser so it's also unchecked in the Chrome settings. :) )

@bob3160
Ok Bob that's why you didn't see the problem.
By default it is on, and causes dead laptop & possibly desktops as well.

I had to fix another laptop last night as well, it was a Leader brand laptop, brand new.
Same problem but the "other" kb that gives problems.

I'll get the kb number & post it tomorrow, I don't have it with me at the moment.
>> edit AEST14:50hr 18/6/2015: this KB number was; KB21919355 <<

avast has a problem that is killing PC's.

It has to be fixed.

Bob it's not "Hardware acceleration" it is "hardware-assisted virtualisation".

This is as the Microsoft kb help says, it will break the PC,  a known problem.

It is still happening.

Avast and Microsoft need to fix this ASAP.

Cheers NH

Question related to "Enable Hardware-Assisted Virtualization" option under the Troubleshooting options:
If I do NOT have the NG module installed, does it make a difference whether or not the above option is checked?   Or is it a moot/meaningless setting when NG is "absent"?
Lenovo T530 laptop, Intel Core i5-3320M @ 2.60 GHz, 8GB RAM, Windows 7 Pro SP1 (64-bit), avast! 17 Free, MBAM3 Pro, Windows Firewall, MVPS HOSTS file, OpenDNS Family Shield, Zemana AntiLogger Free, SpywareBlaster, IE11 & Firefox [both using WOT (IE set to WARN, FF set to BLOCK)], WinPatrol PLUS, uBlock Origin, MBAE, MCShield, CryptoPrevent, SAS (on-demand scanner).
[I believe computer-users who sandbox (Sandboxie) are acting prudently.]

@ky331
Two of the laptops didn't have the NG module installed, one laptop did have the NG module installed when all of them choked on the MS updates.

It made no difference to the out come.

The difference is in turning off avast default setting.

Otherwise a total buggered computer with a default install of avast free version doing the infamous MS updates.

So should I just UNcheck the "Enable Hardware-Assisted Virtualization" option --- permanently --- since enabling it (withOUT the NG module) seems pointless?

Your computer, your choice. I've told you what I've done. :)

The choice for people who know what to do, or know what it means is owned by themselves.

What is avast and Microsoft going to do for the people who don't know the implications and just take the default settings as is.

This is a very deep down technical knowledge needed setting.

One recent possible culprit for issues is KB3057839:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3057839

It's had an impact on another vendor product here:  http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=21246&sid=10be8442615937f7b982d9ca96f79adb

So it's not just avast affected.  Fixing/changing a kernel-mode drive(r) can have unforseen consequences.

Yeah on my 8.1 Pro 64bit System with Media Center, I did turn off Hardware assisted Virtulization a while back, since doesn't support NG module, something with this particular models Motherboard or Processor when it was built years ago.    Windows updates all 18 optional for Windows 8.1 did install normally, and system seems to be responding just fine here at the moment

I installed that update on June 9th and haven't had any problems.

Hi midnight,

The problem in Sandfboxie was a minor one, more like error messages on working a "cut and paste" that are irritating.
When you choose for these messages not to be shown, wait for a new beta to cure it, you are fine.

Use NoScript, a limited user account and a virtual machine and be safe(r)!

Can someone tell me the email address to send this "avast bug report" to please.
This forum post has had over 70000 views and no comments from anyone from avast. WTF?
No questions asked, no please explain, no "we are looking into this"!

Cheers NH

Two new optional updates for Win 7 came in today:
  • KB3065987
  • KB2952664
No support information on KB2952664 yet.  Installed KB3065987 no issues but got two versions of KB2952664.  First posted as optional and second as Recommended.  Wound up with two separate entries for KB 2952664, both installed successfully.
