lost Internet connectivity after virus update this morning

After being prompted to update my virus definitions this morning, my computer was re- booted and now can't connect to Internet, either thru Internet Explorer or Firefox. I'm running Windows 8 (64-bit).

I am able to connect Wi - Fi to my router, but can't get to DNS.

I checked firewall settings (Avast IS 2015, just converted from free to paid subscription) as per other post here. Everything shows as prescribed.

I'd like to not have to un-install, but will if needed. Help please tech support.  Can't handle this smart phone keyboarx...
