"Dot" or "no dot" when adding extensions?

Should file extensions added to the Standard Shield's "Scan files with these extensions" (under "Scan files on open") be given as ".XXX" (dot first) or just "XXX" (no dot)?
Both alternatives seems to be accepted, so maybe it doesn't matter??

Use without dot and separate extensions with comma (like: exe, com, pif, bat)
