Allow me to clarify my statement above. Before I started running avast I was using AVG.
While using AVG I got a trojan. After getting that cleaned up my son told me about avast.
After installing avast I went to the same exact website where I got infected and lo and behold
avast blocked the trojan. I have been with avast ever since.

Since then I have been using a layered approach to security. A firewall with HIPS, MBAM Premium
and other software. My first line of defense is avast. Have my surfing habits changed? Not really!
You are right in saying there is no "one size fits all". However, "if it works, don't fix it".
Dell Inspiron, Win10x64--HP Envy Win10x64--Both systems Avast Free v17.9.2322, Comodo Firewall v8.2 w/D+, MalwareBytes v3.0, OpenDNS, Super Anti-Spyware, Spyware Blaster, MCShield, Unchecky, Vivaldi Browser and, various browser security tools.

I can concur with this about MBAM Premium.
Avast is great but even with good surfing habits I get once a week or so a MBAM block that Avast does not catch.
Having used the two (both Avast & MBAM Premium sctive shields on) it provides me very solid defense since they do address different this. I know you can/should layer on top of the above with other good items but I think the Avast+MBAM Premium is at minimum a must ....no one protection software alone is in this days sufficient.

@ digmor,
@ digmor
Interesting, however one can only state their experience and if in fact they have not gotten infected while using Avast ( And whatever else they use or surfing habbits) , it is what it is.
All things being equal, IMO Your argument could very well hold regardless of AV.
The statement was simply about Avast.  :)
Irregardless of whether you run avast! or another a/v, one cannot expect 100% protection against all threats from any a/v solution, especially any of the newest threats.  So, the other steps you outline above are necessary to provide more complete protection to further enhance the protection avast! provides by itself.  Pro-active layered defense strategy is what it is called.

Trusting avast! to be the complete defense solution by itself is just not enough in today's threat environment.
