Today it suddenly decided that a DLL in a piece of legitimate software was a virus (almost certainly a false positive),
what virusname did avast give the file?
What program did it belong to?

Sometimes file cant be quarantied, it may delete if not able to quarantine.

If you think this is a false positive you may report it here    https://support.avast.com

Info: next time, use viruses and worms forum section for reporting virus/false positive problems

I did not realize that Avast deletes suspected files it cannot quarantine.....in some sense I can see why but I also can see how dangerous this would be.
To the OP.....you could use a util to "undelete" the file......there are tons of them.
I'm not recommending but these two are listed in top of these type utils
http://www.undelete360.com/
http://wisecleaner.com/wisedatarecoveryfree.html

One I've used in past is FreeUnDelete: http://www.officerecovery.com/freeundelete/
