ash.Disp.exe
« on: September 13, 2005, 11:28:15 PM »
Hi.  This has been asked but not answered in a previous post.

Am running WinXP with Avast v.1.4 . Every time I shut down my computer, ashDisp.exe fails to terminate and I get a dialog that says "waiting for a program to end".. and there's a button that says "End now". If I end the program now, everything's fine and my system shutdown proceeds like it should. It is however an annoyance to do it every time I decide to reboot or close my comp. If I disable it first in Task Manager the shutdown goes as expected, but it is annoying and I would like to know how I can prevent this from happening. Nothing appears in the Windows Event logs or in Avast logs that would account for this........Any help would be appreciated. deango

Which firewall do you use?
Which security programs are running while you start the shut down process?

Hi.  On shutdown.  Security apps running are:

Sygate Personal Firewall v 5.5

Avast! v. 4.6 personal
SpyBot S&D v.1.4
Spyware Guard v.2.2.0
Ewido Security Suite  v.3.5
Win Patrol v.9.5.0.1

Thanks...........deango

Deango, no one of them should be a problem.
But if you disable Sygate Personal Firewall and test, then Win Patrol and test, does avast! shuts down without problems?

Hi.  I thought the problem had something to do with Spybot's 'TeaTimer' which I disabled.  I then re-installed Avast 4.6 build 691.  It was ok the first shutdown, but came back on reboot/shutdown.
It turned out to be the EWIDO Security Suite which I had installed a week ago. I uninstalled it, restored my registry from backup and now everything seem to be ok.........Thanks for your help.
By the way, JUST closing the item in the systems tray doesn't help at all..........I had done that with EWIDO to no avail......Thanks again.  deango

:)  From what I have read on various anti-spyware forums,
it is not a good idea to have both SpywareGuard &
Spybot's Teatimer "active" on the same computer, since
they "conflict" with each other. If you have SpywareGuard
you probably also have SpywareBlaster ( I have both )
and the "presence" of Spybot can effect the performance
of SpywareBlaster, as I have read on several posts on the
net-integration.net forums. Ewido is one of the premier
     ( and FREE ) anti-trojan, anti-worm, anti-dialer programs
available and I would never uninstall it for such an
       inconvenience that you shared.

Where did you read, Spiritsongs, that SpywareBlaster & Spybot's Teatimer will conflic?
Seems wrong... They have different principles of protection and won't conflict.
I don't know SpywareGuard.
But, in fact, resident programs could bring some trouble both on boot and shut down time. Besides this fact, I have never a problem with avast! and TeaTimer.
