avast! Pro 2015 Shield Logs
« on: January 09, 2015, 12:51:05 AM »
It appears my laptop downloaded a significant amount of data yesterday over a 15 minute period.  I wasn't on my laptop at the time.  Checking various tasks like Windows Update has not identified the culprit.  I run avast Pro 2015 and it appears to have scanned the file(s).  Is there a log of shield activity?  I can see what the shields are doing in real time but have not found where (or if) this information is stored anywhere.

Thanks, Norbert

Please use the search option before posting.
Where you can find the logs have been told many times before on this webboard and it depends on the OS that is installed.

@Eddy, I have looked through numerous posts and found many log files but none relating to what the Web Shield may have scanned during the period of high network activity.  Statistics / Realtime data shows what is happening now.  My question is whether this information is stored anywhere for after-the-fact analysis.

I am running Windows 8.1 64-bit.

Thanks, Norbert

The web shield log along with other logs don't report everything that was scanned - it would just be too massive for users to easily analyse.

Effectively you get a sub set relating to when it started and closed and what was detected (see attached image1) - the logs are in the C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\report (Vista and later OSes, though I can't say if that is the same for win8.1 as I don't use it).

You can however modify what is recorded in the logs by modifying the content Web Shield > Customise > Report File settings (see attached image2).

That said you must have checked the Generate report file option in the settings to get anything, I believe it may be checked by default.

For what was downloaded you would essentially have to consult something like your firewall logs.

@bob3160/@DavidR, thanks for the detailed information!  I had seen the reports but had not found out how to modify the report settings.  I have turned on a few more options and will monitor what happens.

You're welcome - I think given a little time you may well go back to the default settings as it really does get large very quick.

@ nhoeller, My pleasure.
I've found over the years that in most instances, the default settings usually have been the best. :)
