As the defs appear to be out of date then try to jump start them by installing the latest defs https://www.avast.com/en-gb/download-update

As far as Comodo Firewall goes I have a Win7x64 and I'm running CFW v5.12
without any problems. We have one user with an XP SP3 running CFW v3.14.
If you decide on CFW use extreme caution to install only the firewall and nothing else.
Dell Inspiron, Win10x64--HP Envy Win10x64--Both systems Avast Free v17.9.2322, Comodo Firewall v8.2 w/D+, MalwareBytes v3.0, OpenDNS, Super Anti-Spyware, Spyware Blaster, MCShield, Unchecky, Vivaldi Browser and, various browser security tools.

The easiest is still the Windows Firewall.

For home users the best, and problem free    ;)

And if you need more control you can use this to control Winfirewall    http://tinywall.pados.hu

Your on a Win7 system so as others mentioned already the Windows Firewall is very good, you can add extra control with some of the windows firewall add-on programs such as what Pondus linked though they are not automated, If you'd still prefer to stick with a free third party automated firewall then there is Comodo, OnlineArmor or Privatefirewall... the best paid Firewall imo is Outpost Firewall.

craig, i got rid of pc tools fw plus.  i tjhink(hope) it turned my WINDOWs FW on automatically.

in any, case my security pg looks better and AVAST is running smoother without pc tools fw.
i just hope my pc is safe.

You can check the action centre to see if the firewall is on, click on the little flag icon bottom right in your taskbar - open action centre - and click the drop down for security, firewall and AV should be listed there as on if all is good.
