Avast! 4.6
« on: September 18, 2005, 12:32:27 AM »
Hi folks!

I am new with Avast! and of course to this forum. I recently installed Avast! v4.6 and it works fine. I think. My problem is that after fighting evil BHO, I seem to have lost the two Avast! icons in the System Tray. Is there any way to get them back beside re-installation??? My Task Manager informs me that Avast! is running and if I open Outlook? Avast! trails right behind it. Any ideas please???
 :'(

Cheers,
 ;)

Thanks Cloussau!!!

Done, but it didn't do it. No Icons on the System Tray yet. I am sure there must be something erased on the Registry when I killed all the BHO's.

Anymore suggestions???

MAB
By the way I reboot the PC just in case.

Download avast! External Control clicking on 'Control' in my signature.
Unzip it and run.
You'll see avast! tweaker option.
Choose to show system tray icon and let us see if it helps.

Another way to fix the problem, just add the path to ashDisp.exe into
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
(as the value named avast!).

Are you by any chance using spysweeper?
If so, use the restore/recover or whatever it may be called to restore the deleted registry entry and update your definitions file for spysweeper. It reports incorrectly (false positive) the avast ashDisp.exe which is the icon you see on your system tray.

For the 'i' icon (VRDB): http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=14356.msg121337#msg121337

Fix tool for missing tray icons. Download it here: http://www.excessive-software.tk/
Download it and extract aswTrayIconFix.exe anywhere you want. I'm not sure it is still available...
Run it and just click Fix button. Log off and log in again or simply restart your PC and icons should be back again. The program is standalone extract&use (although it looks like installer).

How did you kill the BHO, hijackthis, etc?

If so backups should be created by HJT (or what ever you used) so you should be able to reverse/recover/restore them. They will obviously have a path indicating the avast folder.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Hey guys!!! Sorry for the delay.

 First to Tech:

I downloaded the External Control but it didn't do the trick.

Then I went to the Registry:

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and made the entry Avast! ......... C:\Program Files\....\Avast4\ashDisp

 BINGO!!!!! The Icons are back.

 No Spysweeper here.

I went to the two sites but I didn't understand the message forum and I couldn't find the file in the second one.

 To DavidR:

In the heat of battle you must blast those BHO rascals to death and if you survive (like I did) then rebuilt from the ashes.

Thanks guys, that was the last in my "must-do" list.

Best regards,

MAB ;D

I am new to avast so please forgive me for my stupid question.  I would like to know if avast home edition protects me from spyware or not since it said it detects all kind of malware.

Some spyware, yes.
All of them... maybe it won't be possible unless you use layered defension. Do not trust in only one product. If you fails, well, you have the others.
Ad-aware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster and Ewido are some of the others you must have  8)
