Understanding avast4.ini file

If you do not add that line it will be considered automatically.
Some default entries are not shown in avast4.ini file, although they're considered by avast.
You need to add that entry if you want to set a different startup time for rootkit scanning.

A) don't have blank lines in the sections.
B) you need the = equals sign between the parameter name and the value, without spaces.

e.g.
[AntiRootkit]     
WaitOnStart=120

Having said that I believe the default value is already 120 I believe so setting that same value would have zero effect to the default.

Why do you think you need to add this value ?
As Tech mentioned you don't need to do anything as the avast4.ini is effectively for changes to the defaults.

It would probably be best to have asked the question in the other topic you posted in and answer my question there.

Snowstryder, welcome to the forum.
Can you post a new topic under the appropriate child board. If you are currently trying to deal with an infection, that would be the "viruses and worms" section.
In it could you state your Operating System, any other security software running, and the names of any malware found, along with the paths.
If you are not dealing with an infection, but Avast doesn't seem to be working normally, post it under the "avast4 pro/home" child board, for general info and advice, under the "general topics" child board.

This is a good place to get help and advice.

- Go to this link, http://forum.avast.com/index.php, scroll down to the Viruses and Worms forum and click it, click the New Topic button at the top of the list and post there.

However, there really was no need to do anything.
- Decompression Bomb, a file that is highly compressed, which could be very large when decompressed. This used to be a tactic long ago to swamp the system, also see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=15389.msg131213#msg131213.
 
The name really is the most dangerous thing about this and I wish they would change it or simply not report it, a real PITA.

Please read the topic above yours and create a new topic. However, I would say there is little mileage in this as a) the VRDB has been dropped in avast 5 and b) as such the concept even is 4.8 is of diminished value.

The VRDB was designed many years ago but malware has advanced and cleaning it even with the VRDB has become more complex. I would disable it in 4.8 if you are going to stay on 4.8.

No, the latest is 5.0.418 version.

I hope that this is not classed as grave-digging on this long-standing thread but I'd like to clarify on how to actually edit avast4.ini.  It was mentioned earlier in the thread that one should use Notepad or an editor of one's choice but AFAICT, you can only use Notepad.  I normally use Textpad but on the Save, it is denied access... same for Wordpad.  With Notepad, when you Save the file, you get an Avast security window pop-up warning which asks if you wish to proceed and allows you to overwrite the the avast4.ini file in the DATA sub-folder.  It appears, then, that Avast is hard-coded to allow the "intrusion" using Notepad only??

The mentioned post has been done long before the self-defense features were added.
So yes, either you disable avast! self-defense first, or you have to use Notepad.exe (we are not going to whitelist all existing editor executables, sorry).

just had my free AVAST upgraded and now, everytime it upgrades or stops a virus, it tells me so.   How can I turn that off please?   I go into the Status and hit 'silent/gaming mode', but that only turns her voice off for a little while, and it's annoying, especially if your sound is turned up.   thank you.
