Large autosandbox.log
« on: January 22, 2015, 05:26:36 AM »
I'm running out of space on my SSD and noticed today that C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log\autosandbox.log is 4GB in size. First of all: is this normal? Second: can this file be safely deleted? I would assume so because it is just a "log" but we all know what assuming does.

Hi jesse22,

Welcome to the forums.
  • Version of avast?  Version 2015?  Free, Pro, AIS, Premier?
  • Do you have NG enabled?
  • What is the size limit of your SSD?
Options are to move off personal data, files, etc., to another drive to free up space on SSD (you should routinely back up your personal files in any case) or turn off sandbox feature within avast.  I wouldn't touch the autosandbox.log but research first why it is needed before even considering a deletion of this file:  http://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/autosandbox-test-tool-for-avast.297621/
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=what+is+the+avast+autosandbox.log+file+used+for%3F

Sandbox feature is there to isolate a new or unknown executables from your main system to prevent possible harm to it.  It is an enhanced protection feature within avast.

Primary issue here is space, or the lack of it, rather than the size of the autosandbox.log file.

Many other options to consider first, here's a start:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/free-up-disk-space
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Running+out+of+free+space+on+my+hard+drive

A free tool to see what files are taking up the most space on your drive:  http://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/

Hope this helps.

Did you really just tell me to clean up my drive and Google it? The fact that I discovered this file existed in the first place should show you I've already done all of that  ;)

Problem has been solved. I simply moved the file to test if it would be re-created and it was. Since it was much smaller I was able to open it in a text editor and read it. The sandbox was having problems with the LastPass for Applications executable. Uninstalled/reinstalled LastPass and it no longer had a problem.

This should still be investigated by Avast because there was never any indication given to me that the sandbox was having problems with this application. And the log probably shouldn't be allowed to grow to an unlimited size either. What do I need to do to help with this investigation?

I would say do nothing for now.
Later this month or (as someone said next month), there will be a new release for avast.
It could very well be the problem is solved in that version.

If you still want to report it, use the ticket system on avast's website and put a link to this thread in your message.
