Is avast stopping my computer from shutting down?
« on: January 29, 2015, 06:49:13 PM »
Ive had my laptop I bought last summer to service 3 times.
The computer wont shutdown, it goes blacscreen but keeps on chugging until the battery runs out.
Also, when I close the laptop together for sleep modus the screen wont startup again.
Today they said the fault lies with avast stopping the system from logging off.
I have avast on 3 other computers and there is no such problem, the tech support guy
said using avast was like bringing a punchured condom to town.
Ive had avast for many years and have no beef with it, but is is possible that avast is doing this?
And should that affect it from re awakening from sleep mode?

I've not encountered with avast what you are describing though my laptop will do exactly that if I leave my sd card in the slot...screen will go black - keyboard remains lit and never completely shuts down.

Tech support guy sounds like an idiot.

No probs here.

Do you have an external HD attached?
Are you installing windows updates at the time?
Does it happen every time regardless of time on?
Have you done an actual reboot... ever (not just sleep)?

Could be a problem with the registry hive...

What OS/version?

Win 8.1

It is able to reboot once maybe twice, then fails everytime.
No external HD, winows update where installed until no more was available(they did that)

Happens if its been on for hours and when its been turned on recently.
Did one reboot, after that it wont anymore, only power button works :/

I have it on my own desktop and on my other laptop, no problem there.

i suggest attaching a diagnostic log here in your next reply

see here  https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0
scroll down to Farbar Recovery Scan Tool .... run as instructed and attach the two diagnostic logs

when done, essexboy will have a look

Apparently 8.1 has a lot of issues with reboots.  Try this:

askvg.com/fix-windows-8-restart-and-shutdown-problems-by-disabling-hybrid-shutdown-feature/

If that doesnt work, google for various fixes and try those.  Very doubtful it has anything to do with avast though.

Try to:
run sfc /scannow
run checkdisk and fix disk errors

Worse comes to worst, if this just started and used to work when you first got the laptop, then you could also rebuild the computer or set it back to factory defaults (something may have corrupted).

Good luck

Well, I dont have the PC anymore, delivered it tonight to the shop where I bought it.
They have reset to factory settings 3 times now over 5 weeks, and thats the max amount of tries a company has
to fix your computer before you demand a refund.Every time the y reset it it works for 2-4 restarts, then it starts to fail.

First they blamed malware, then avast. When they gave it back today it had the same problems.
So i just delivered it and demanded my money back =) Will get a answer tomorrow.

Well, I went to see how the pc case was gonna get resolved.
I got yelled at by the tech guy manager, feelt like I was a 12 year old
being scolded.Avast was behind the problems :P
Avast was mafiaware or something he said lol, and sent me home with the PC with factory settings.

When 'I got home i tried rebooting and sleep mode, worked 1 time, then I tried again without installing avast.
And the computer malfunctioned again xD

So I went back to the pc store, and long story short, im up 1K Euros  8)
But I need a new laptop  ::)
