Oh blast.... I was thinking the Icons were appearing by themselves  :(

I'm sorry to ask more questions but it helps....

Did you install Avast into the 'default' location (folder). Can you just confirm the path to the Avast4 folder (also, is that where ashdisp is located?).

Can you open the Avast4.ini file and tell us what is in the sections named [MailScanner] and [Simple] and [VRDB]

You should find the Avast4.ini file in the Adwil/avast4/data folder, the description might be configuration settings.

Do Other Icons in the Taskbar come and go with their applications.

I am a Brit now moved to Spain  ;)

again, I had to manually activate ashDisp.exe
Help, please!
CoJo

Why don't you put a link for ashDisp.exe in your startup folder?
What is your OS (I did not remember)  ;)

As Vlk said ashDisp.exe is, as you figured out, just the tray icon - if you don't like it, you can kill it... This process is actually responsible for all UI of the resident modules, including the virus alerts, updating windows etc... (the services never display anything, they "don't interact with the desktop" in MS tech parlance).

If avast tray icon missing the resident protection mau be still active (it runs by ashserv.exe and ashsimpl.exe). All of them are:

ashDisp.exe (App - actually, tray icon)
ashMaiSv.exe (App)
ashserv.exe (Service)
ashSimpl.exe (App, present only if console window is open)
aswUpdSv.exe (Service)

Cojo, try a full look at these foruns related to ashDisp.exe.

Suggestion: need way to stop ALL services/processes
Resident Protection always Disabled
ashdisp strange
Re:Avast/RPCSS.exe accessing the internet..worried user
AAVM detected a RPC error
Avast tray icon missing
Resident Protection

The problem is not with ashMail.exe, but ashDisp.exe...  ;)

Cojo,

It's the problem that is annoying, not you  ;) ;) ;)

Well you ini file has the same settings as mine in the relavent sections.

Do other icons on the system tray come and go as they should??? an example...the two computers for the internet connection???

Finally ... FOR NOW... it's 3:00am here in Spain :) . Get the Icons working manually.... click the files as you have been. Right click on the 'a' icon and check the pause providers from the menu... you should see that Outlook is listed (running), meaning your e-mail is protected.

We'll bash Vlk's ear in the morning and see if he has any suggestions.

Technicals references are good ones, but a little involved and some not yet resolved  :-\

But tonight...  ;) do other tray icons come and go???.... I'm wondering if it's XP  ???

Walker.

Cojo,

I'm going too, thank you, but before I do, are your other Icons behaving properly?? ?? ??

And please delete your forum message with the long file and your personal info.
