Snap! crashes using Safezone browser
« on: February 14, 2015, 08:34:21 PM »
Running Avast 2015.10.0.2208 on Windows XP 5.1.2600 SP3 on OptiPlex 745. Ever since this update (installed 11/7/2014) I've been experiencing Snap! crashes in the Safezone browser, mostly with last.fm, but also with other websites, but not e.g. with pandora or netflix. The Snap! suggestions are not of much use because they suggest disabling antivirus software.

Because of this I've been using crappy IE for last.fm. Since then every now and then avastsvc.exe will take 100% cpu on one core and I typically need to reboot to recover from this. Possibly something with flash (running latest 16.0.0.305).

Any ideas why 2015.10.0.2208 is causing this problem with certain websites, or has the browser become more strict and are the websites the problem? Is there a workaround?

Are the "other websites" all playing video/music through flash?

I see the sandbox has its own flash version, 13.0.0.206, which is quite a bit older than the release 16.0.0.305. Then found that with this avast beta version youtube doesn't work. It uses html5 based player. The ads play without sound and with the actual video it just spins (you can thumb through it but it doesn't stream). Tried vimeo which uses flash and it works. Pandora also uses flash for the ads and it works. But with last.fm get a consistent crash a couple of sec after logging in before even starting a station, so before player window opens. Works fine with IE8.

HTML5 is not a media player, it is a HTML standard.
And yes, as has been announced, Youtube is stepping away from flash and is gonna use the HTML5 standard.

This looks like a shortcoming in SafeZone to me.
I will try to get someone from avast to have a look at this.

Semantics. If you rightclick on the youtube player screen it says 'about the html5 player'. Thanks for escalating this.
Found I can stop avastsvc from taking 100% cpu by turning the avast firewall off for a minute or so, but then it goes back up to 100% if I do anything with the internet, like browse with IE8 or start thunderbird mail reader. All the settings in the avast firewall are default.
