What was the location of the infected file?
example (C:\windows\system32\infected-filename.xxx)?
What is your OS?

If you have winXP/NT/w2k then you can schedule a boot-time scan from within avast! THis runs before windows loads so hopfully it will be able to delete or move the infected file.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

:) Sometime RPC "problems" can be corrected by using the
"DCOMbomulator" from www.grc.com/dcom !? Select the
"Disable" setting to correct a "flaw" in the "DCOM", which
     is "connected" to the "RPC".

On trying to move to virus chest it says RPC server is unavilable, cannot process

RPC error is most likely correct by this procedure:
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the pop up window (Repair).

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Please, run a full avast! scan to get clean, sending infected files to Chest.
If you can't start an avast! scanning and use the Chest after that, you shoul try to schedule a boot-time scanning:
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning > Select for scanning archives > Boot.
