ACTIVE PROTECTION SHIELDS WON'T TURN ON
« on: February 19, 2015, 12:44:54 PM »
Hi

We have the paid version of avast on our home computer, but a few days ago it started saying "YOU ARE UNPROTECTED! Avast background service is not working" and 4 of the shields were turned off. Now the firewall has turned itself off too.

When I try to turn them back on it won't let me, and when I click 'resolve now' or 'start now' it won't, or just says it is 'unable to'. I also tried going through computer programs & repairing avast twice but nothing happened when I restarted, it was just the same message of it not working!

If anybody could help I would be so grateful. I tried ringing the support number but she wasn't very helpful.

Getting quite urgent now, as it is the main computer!!

Thanks

controlpanel > ad/remove programs > avast > uninstall/change > repair option ....wait a minute and reboot

important that any previous used or factory installed AV is removed

General: Uninstalling a third-party antivirus software   https://www.avast.com/en-eu/faq.php?article=AVKB11#artTitle

Hi

I just did what you said, but now the computer won't turn on. I click 'start windows normally' and then it just turns off again. Tried starting it in safemode but the same thing happens. "RGB no input signal" Any advice please?

Thanks

RGB no input sign would suggest a video card problem

Hi thanks

How do I fix this please? My computer just keeps rebooting but fails, and tries to restart, repeatedly. If it is the video card, what would have caused this? Could it be a virus???

No it is a hardware problem.  Is the video card on the motherboard or is it a PCI one

I'm not sure. Would I have to dismantle the CPU to find this out?

I had the same problem that some shields won't turn on. I like more then one anti-virus software as NO single program will catch everything. I like AVAST very much, but it's not perfect. I realize that this sometimes causes problems, but AVAST seems to play nicer with other security programs then other antivirus programs that I've had. 1 of my shields wouldn't turn on & Avast's solution is to delete every other program. I tried
many things over a few days without success. Finally I just deleted AVAST & re-installed and that solved (at least right now) this problem. AVAST
should VASTLY improve the troubleshooting section (self diagnosis) of it's program. I can't say that I've had any luck with windows repair programs, but worth a shot.
