i recently had a high disk activity issue with v2215 and tracked it down to the software updater module. I disabled this and wham.....problem solved. Wonder if this is related to what you guys are discussing here?
Software (Program) updates are set to manual by default.
VPS (Virus data base) updates are on by default as they should be to keep your protection
against the newest discovered viruses as up to date a s possible. (streaming updates)

Hi Bob3160. See my response https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=168703.msg1200471#msg1200471
So you've removed the Software Updater Scan. It's an optional tool not really part of the AV program.

Unfortunately not, for me. I never install the Software Updater module for Avast!, I mostly just install the Shield Protection and nothing more. I feel the other features are just a waste of space. I'm still having the problem with just the Shields installed.

So what sort of compensation will we get for the damage it has done to our SSDs over the past week????
This has been hammering my SSD with 70MB sec writing for the past few days, managed to stop it after 2215 update and settings/ tools and disabling all tools and then re-enabling them.

I expect better from Avast and I would have expected you to tell us to roll the software back a version to stop this damage if that would have fixed it temporarily.

Good question Peter...
::)  I reported numerous problems since the new program version came out.  I usually get the same response.  Do a clean reinstall.  Been there, done that.  They (Avast team) say this is the final version 2015.10.2.2215 that I just installed (cleaned out all the old avast stuff).  However, my CPU is running at about 15-20% all the time when I am just sitting in front of my computer.  Don't even have to be doing anything.  Why are the system processes using 80-100% of my memory all the time?
Someone earlier suggested disabling persistent cache by customizing the File Shield settings and unchecking it (turning it off).  Oh how I wish this  would have worked. NOT! :-\

What am I supposed to do if one of my fans go and my hard drive fries??  I will be extremely unhappy. :'(

::)  I feel really stupid right now!!  I just did some checking at other topics... which I should have done at first.  I followed this topic and also Bob's and disabled 3rd party software updater.  I AM ELATED... it did the trick.  Please excuse this impatient granny.  And thanks carfal and Bob! ;)

I also used Program and settings and Changed Avast and Removed the Program Updater Module. I don't have an SSD drive but also saw a lot of HD usage.
After the requested restart, the HD usage was still between 90% - 98%. That excessive usage continued for 11 minutes and then drastically subsided.
The most active module at the time when there was a lot of HD activity was avast! Service (32 bit).

I have had the same thing happen after updating to the most recent version on 3/23/15.  I have Windows indexing turned off.  I tried uninstalling with the avast cleaner, and reinstalling. I tried deleting the lscache.dat file in safemode, turning off the automatic updates and nothing worked to stop the unwanted constant chattering on my hard drive.

My problem seems to be with the file system shield.  When I turn it off, the chattering of the scanning stops.  Needs a fix fast.

Thanks for the free product though.  Other than this most recent problem, I have been happy with the product.

Thanks Bob for the additional information.  My elation was short lived.  I  am going to remove the program updater module as well.  Hopefully this will fix this issue.
I have used Avast for years; however this current build seems to be the most troublesome yet.
Bob your help is appreciated.

I have the same problem - Avast is writing about 10 - 15 MB per sec to lscache file. Writing is stopped when file shield is stopped. Reinstall, disabling cache - nothing help. It is on version 2015.10.2.2215.

I am intensely disappointed to discover after 3 weeks of having my SSD disk thrashed (>50Mb/s all day) and struggling to find a cause.  To then find that Avast shields and cach is the culprit.  Why is the Avast activity hidden in the Task Manager and Resources as a system activity.  Turning of shields has stopped the activity. Far from paying anymore for this service I should be asking for damages to my hard drive.

I have lost all confidence in Avast.

I too am very weary of the CPU and memory usage of this current build.  When I check my resource monitor it shows about 10+ avast connections running in the background; this isn't counting the 9 or so that are running normally.
Honestly I would rather go back to previous version (before 3/3/15).  At least I felt secure, and my system wasn't being thrashed.  I do like Avast, used it for over 8 years.  I've recommended to friends, family and neighbors as the best.  But...
What else can I do to alleviate some of the load from my CPU and memory?  I have read so may articles, I'm just truly confused and frustrated  :-\
Please help...

I traced my excessive Disk usage to WmiPrvSE.exe
And as you can see, I've found a solution.

Open your Services program. The easiest way to find is just click Start, type Services, hit Enter.

Under Services (Local), scroll down until you find the “Windows Management Instrumentation” service and select Restart.

I have to respectfully disagree to this as a "solution".

avast is misbehaving, not playing well, bugged, incompatible, whatever you want to call it, with windows.  Do we fix windows or avast?  Even if we fix windows, do we do this every boot?  This is bug that avast simply need to fix.

I too ran into the same problem, the activity seemed to either stopped on its own, or stopped after I tried several things found from searching the forums...
