ZenMate Chrome extension
« on: March 14, 2015, 05:03:54 PM »
I have been trying to use the ZenMate chrome extension (a VPN) and finally narrowed the problem down to Avast WebShield. If I disable it, connect to a website through ZenMate, and re-enable- I continue to be able to use ZenMate for a few minutes, but then I can't connect again. There is no message that Avast has blocked anything when this is happening. What is causing this? It seems like ZenMate is a reputable extension. Is there a way around this?

Thanks!

The extension uses most probably a hardcoded SSL certificate rather than the system keychain and so it can not work with HTTPS scanning enabled. Additionally the webshield can not distinguish it from the browser as it is the same process, that's why the "scan only traffic from browsers" option has no effect in this case. The solution is to add the VPN server the extension is using into the excluded servers in the webshield configuration.
