Windows 98 and Web Shield not working

I have set up my IE Browser per the instructions in the tutorial I found under the search feature, but Web Shield is still not scanning any sites.  Standard  Shield and Internet Mail shield work.
The instructions in the help manual of Avast were a little different than the tutorial but that shouldn't have affected the http scan.
The machine I am using is Windows 98, 450mhz, 256RAM with spywareblaster, kerio firewall, avast, adaware, Spybot S&E (all free versions), and it is networked to my Windows XP SP2 machine with a network cable.  I have a dialup connection.
Is there something that I missed

Yes, you've forgot to tell us how both computers connect.
Is the XP computer the gateway and the other connects using Internet Connection Shared?
Or not, both computers have modem and connect independently of each other?

Sorry Tech,
XP is the gateway and the 98 uses Internet connection Shared.  I only use the modem on the XP machine.  I use a cable to connect them via Network cards.

That is correct.  I did it according to instructions in Help and tutorial.

^ My Webshield didn't work for my WIN98 OS either until I found that I had entered "1280" instead of the correct "12080". Wouldn't you know it actually worked when I entered the correct LocalHost value.

Lukas, does the second computer using the Internet Shared Connection will use the same port 12080 to receive from the first (really connected) the HTTP traffic. If the first has a local proxy (WebShield), won't it interfere with the second? Sorry my ignorance.

I rechecked and have 12080 in the field.  I have one more question.
Why does the help file in Avast tell us to do this:

"Check the option Use a proxy server for your LAN
Write localhost into the Address field (alternatively, you can enter IP address 127.0.0.1, which is the same as localhost).
Enter 12080 into the Port field. "

and the tutorial tell us to click Advanced on the same page (server page) and put the information on the Proxy servers page making sure the Use Proxy Server for all Protocols is not checked.

If you do what Avast tells you all the options have the information and there is a check in the Use Proxy Server for all Protocols box.\

but if you do what the tutorial says,  only the http option has the localhost:12080 information.

Which is correct and why?

Which is correct and why?

WebShield scans HTTP data. It does not scan HTTPS (secured connections) since they are encrypted. When used as a proxy, it is also able to scan FTP transfers, since the browser uses HTTP protocol to comunicate with the proxy and the proxy itself connects with FTP server.

So what is correct and why? Well they are both correct. If you configure the proxy only for HTTP protocol you will eliminate the need to use the proxy as a pass-through for HTTPS. If you'll use the proxy for all protocols you will profit from the FTP scanning but you might loose some functionality when accessing FTP sites (e.g. Drag-n-drop) - depending on your browser and it's configuration.

This however will not solve your original problem - why WebShield does not scan your connections.

Do you have any Dialup and/or VPN connections that are being used on the Win98 machine? Perhaps the proxy should be configured on the dialup account instead of the LAN acnt.

thanks for your explanation.   I understand now.
Since I don't dial up on the 98 machine but use the connection that has already been made to the internet on the XP machine would it matter if I originally used the 98 machine for dial up.  I have always used the same ISP so the info would be the same.  I just checked on VPN connections, and I don't know if I have one.  I used the Network Setup  Wizard in XP to set up the network between these two machines.  The wizard made a floppy to put on the 98 machine to network it to the XP.  According to the definitions of each kind of connection, I think I have  dial up with remote access> When I go to Control Panel/Network Connections, It says LAN or high speed Internet over the Local Area Connection Icon.
I am using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) does that make a difference?  I am allowing the 98 computer to connect to the internet through the XP Computers Internet connection.
Is it possible that Avast is checking sites on my XP computer even though I am using the 98?  I will check that now. No that isn't happening.
I have no trouble with Avast checking my sent and received mail.
