Exclusion ignored....or not?
« on: March 23, 2015, 04:49:33 PM »
I added www.aol.com to the exclusions, yet Avast pops up messages that it's blocking access to aol.com, YET it isn't actually blocking access. We just switched to free Avast from a very good antivirus program, and I'm now wondering it we can trust Avast. Should we be concerned?

No problems here accesing aol.com.

Did you check your firewall ?
Did you run removal utility tool for your old AV ?
Could you capture and attach Avast Alert ?

so avast give a block popup, but does not block aol.com .....
then as iroc9555 say, we need you to attach a screenshot of that popup warning so we can see what avast is blocking

Your asked to attach the message Avast is giving you.

You most likely know how, but just in case.

When you get the alert (message) from Avast then do the following:

If you use Windows press the ctrl+prt sc (control key + print screen) at the same time (FYI, what this does is save the an image that has focus to the clipboard).

Go to Paint, Programs > Accessories > and click on Paint (the likely path) to open.

Paste to Paint application (if you have a fairly recent version of Paint one place this can be done is the clip board labeled "Paste" in the upper left corner of the interface) otherwise you can also press ctrl+V (control key + key "V").  Save the file in a folder you'll need to find later.  File > Save as > give it a file name and press "save".

Then enter your reply in this topic, to attach in the Avast forum Click on "Attachments and other options" just below this Avast forum text (message) box.  Click on "browse" to find your file you saved with the message from Avast double/click on the file (or you can select it, one click and click "open") which will then attach the file so you can post to the topic with the attached Avast alert message.

Or they can use an open source alternative like Greenshot.
Greenshot easy to use and has editing tools built-in.  8)

Thanks for your replies. I am just now getting back here, sorry.

When I click CTRL PRTSC, nothing happens, i.e., when I then open Paint, there's nothing to paste (paste is grayed out, and CTRL-V doesn't paste anything).

This is the content of the pop-up:

"Avast Web Shield has blocked access to this page because the following certificate has been revoked: www.aol.com."

It's possible this pop-up is happening in Firefox and not in IE.

Like I said, no problem for me with none of my browsers, FF or IE. see screenshot

BTW I hope you already deleted that aol exclusion you created in the webshield. Not a good idea to exclude a web site just because...

First. It is not ctrl + PrtSc. It is just PrtSc to take the whole screen image. If you want only the alert or the image in the foreground is Alt+PrtSc. Either way you can also snip the image using the snipping tool to make it smaller or just to show what it is important. Yes you can paste the image with Ctrl+v, but you need to copy it first ;)

Anyhow since I do not have any problems going to aol, and I imagine Pondus either, it is better if an specialist take a look at your system.

Follow this guide: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

Open a new topic and attach ( Do not copy/paste ) logs for Malwarebytes ( MBAM ), Farbar Recovery Scan Tool ( FRST ), and aswMBR.exe here:

Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't understand why telling Web Shield to allow aol.com is "just because," when I did it so Avast would know not to allegedly block aol.com (even though it isn't really blocking it). As I said, aol.com works fine for me, always. The pop-up is erroneous, but it is annoying too.

I'm also not sure why you need a screen shot when I transcribed the pop-up message for you verbatim, but if I'm able to get a screen shot, I'll certainly provide it to whichever specialist I communicate with going forward.

Thanks again for your time. I'll follow the suggestions in the last post above and take it from here.

Because it is no a good idea to exclude a web site of being analized by Avast even if it is a trust site. Remember that a clean site today can be an infected site tomorrow.

It is just procedure and a way for us ( who help here ) to have a collection of alerts by Avast. Besides, an image is worth a thousand words.

If it only the case that Avast was unable to add/restore the root certificate into the trusted certificate store, you can try this procedure described by lukor here:

Guess I don't know how to post an image. No problem with screenshots but posting images I have no clue. BEYOND frustrated at this point.

In the Reply window, just below the text entry is 'Attachments and other options' clicking that expands the functionality to be able to attach an image or file to your post. You have to have saved your screenshot to a .jpg, .png or gif image file format.
