system crashes

Hi Folks,
for the past couple of months my computer has been randomly crashing, often on startup but often anytime.  When I try to run an avast system scan, it crashes, when I try to uninstall avast it crashes.
I am running xp and the current free avast version.  Has anyone else had this problem?

What do you mean with crashing? Blue screen or Avast only crash?

What exact OS/SP ?
What exact version of avast ?
Any other security (related) software installed ? (or did you)
What is the exact error that you are getting ?
