Quick scan question
« on: April 09, 2015, 12:17:39 AM »
Every time I run the quick scan (Free edition) it takes several hours to finish it, I was wondering if this is normal or not?
I haven't tried the other types as I don't want to experiment how long it takes.

Have you tried to close the GUI then re-open it to see if the scan is still running or has completed?
Is this a scheduled scan or an on demand scan?

Am I the only one who experience a long scanning time?

Hi mxmy :)

I don't think this is normal.

Try a repair of Avast! :

1) Start - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - Avast! - Change.
2) Repair.
3) Follow the instructions.
4) Reboot.

If that doesn't help, is there a particular file that takes a long time to scan ?

If the repair suggested by Rednose doesn't fix the problem, you may need to do a clean install of Avast.
You'll find instructions in my signature.

Thanks Bob,
I tried your suggestion but it hasn't changed its behavior.
It doesn't get stuck to any particular file or folder, I just can see that it takes long to perform a quick scan (I presume it should take about few minutes in my case with a 500 gb hard drive where half is still free). Otherwise the program works fine, get the latest updates, and can quickly update softwares. Its just the scan that takes too long, we have another laptop at home and is also running Avast free, it has the same problem too, and we have no issue at all with our laptops.

Since you have twice as much data to check as I, I'd expect it to take a little more than twice the length of time it took for my scan.

Take a look at Bob's image above. It says 20 mins. Mine takes about 17 mins to scan about 70 GB

Running Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit; Samsung 120 GB SSD drive.

See attached below:

No, I do not think your scan results are normal.  Before the hard drive upgrade, I saw roughly 10-12 minutes for a quick scan for the same amount of data scanned.

More data present on your hard drive, the longer the quick scan will take.  If you could attach a similar screenshot of your quick scan results, it will show how much data is scanned.

It all depends upon how much file your computer has and how much data does Avast scan in a quick scan. I have some programs that are quite big i.e. Revit, SketchUp, and some big Autodesk programs. All other computer essentials are also to be scanned. Here is my scan result.

Note: This is my 1st time doing a full system scan ever since Avast 2015 was released. I even haven't done a full system scan when I installed the 2015 version.

Correct me if I am wrong, I think 1st time scan it should take some time to scan the files and by doing weekly scan the scan should be faster.
