Webshield throttles my net (again)
« on: April 09, 2015, 01:36:21 PM »
Hi,

I've had problems using the new Avast web shield (introduced sometime during 2014, I think?) on my previous installation (see here: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=160114.0). I have reinstalled the OS, installed the latest Avast and the latest Zone Alarm Free (the firewall, that I use). After cca two months the problems resurfaced. Whenever my web connection is throttled, I turn off Avast's web shield and everything is fine. This makes me believe the web shield is the culprit, but perhaps it could be a conflict between Avast and some other app. I would like to find a solution and keep Avast as I really like the direction it is heading now (well, except for the firewall's program list which I find very, very bad). I have almost purchased Avast along with the OS reinstall, but the web shield issues history convinced me not to.

Any kind help would be very appreciated.

Best regards,

PH

Issues experienced with web shield ON (occasional, not constant):
  • downloaded packed file (.zip, etc) contains crc errors
  • mangled jpegs appear on web pages (the bricks effect)
  • web page appears as text only, parts of html showing (seems like the page code did not download correctly)
  • web page with mangled parts usually keeps loading (the icon in the FF toolbar keeps rotating as it does during web page download)
  • misc errors appear instead of a web page (content encoding error, secure connection failed, server not found, etc.)
  • streaming video stops playing and freezes

What exact version of avast do you have installed now ?
If it isn't this one:
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=168376.0
perform a clean installation with that one.
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=168680.msg1199245#msg1199245

Does it happen in all browsers (e.g. Opera) ?

I am very sorry to see no reply from Avast. I will have to battle this on my own then. The first thing is going to be to try another A/V. Not that it makes me happy.

Since you haven't my questions/followed my suggestion, I assume you just posted and don't want any help at all.

With all respect, Eddy, you are not a member of Avast support and your posts are too generic.

That doesn't mean I can't help you.
Keep in mind that this is a public webboard and it is mostly users helping users.

avast can't help you either if you don't provide details.
Keep in mind that we can not see your system, only you can.

With all respect, Eddy, you are not a member of Avast support and your posts are too generic.
As eddy already explained, this is primarily a User helping User service. Avast occasionally jumps in.
I also noticed from your last thread, that you seem to only respond if Avast happens to make a comment and,
seem to ignore all other suggestions.
As Eddy said, you appear not to want any help from this forum but only from Avast.
If that's the case, then try the following help approach: https://support.avast.com/Tickets/Submit

@bob3160
Thanks for the idea, Bob3160! I wasnt aware of support tickets. Just filled one :-) I received avast support help in this forum in the past so I expected it again. I didnt notice any "community forum" note around here, but it is certainly possible that avast support only comes here occasionally. Such is the situation w firefox community support forum for example.
Many thanks again, hope I can resolve this :-) Who knows whats happening in my PC, sigh.
Regards,
PH

Hi there p.t,

Thank you for your bug report! Since we can't reproduce your problem here, we will find any piece of information from you really helpful. Could you please generate support package (download link and basic how-to at https://www.avast.com/en-us/faq.php?article=AVKB33 , please don't forget to tick the option 'Automatically send to Avast') and post the package id here?

Thanks again,
B.

Hi,
after the last program (Avast) update, the problems mentioned above disappeared (or rather 98-99%). Have been testing it extensively with both the new web shield and HTTPS scanning turned ON.
Hope this helps someone too.

PH
