VRDB icon in systray?
« on: October 19, 2005, 02:12:05 PM »
This is not a major crisis, but I'm wondering why the VRDB icon, which is set to remain hidden unless active, has been in my system tray (notification area) for 4 days now.

I have it configured to generate a new data base while the system is idle and have even gone so far as to manually generate a new data base just to see if it would go away. The system remains idle for several hours at a time during the day and is shut down at night and rebooted every morning. AVAST has been installed for about 4 months and has worked correctly until now.

WinXP, 512 K ram, 14 Gb available HD space, AVAST, Ad-Aware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster

Is it rotating, if not is isn't running, right click it and see if you can merge it as it may have reverted to split for some reason.

Personally I use the Generate VRDB Now every two weeks (less than the three week default) as part of my regular system maintenance as I know when it has been done and it only takes about 6-7 minutes and it is done.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

No, it wasn't rotating until I forced a data base update. But the two icons had been separate until now with the VRDB icon simply hidden unless it was regenerating.

I've merged the two for now. I was under the understanding that the database renewed itself every 2 weeks without any input from me. So, now what will happen that the 2 icons are merged? Will the 2-week cycle continue or will I have to remember to take care of the update myself?

Thanks...

The default cycle is 3 weeks not 2, even when merged at the start of the VRDB generation the i icon will split for the duration of the scan and merge again on completion. However, the generate when idle may well take a considerable time as the start may well occur whilst you are working, so it will be starting and stopping frequently.
The cycle should start without input from you after the default delay of 3 weeks (or you can edit this in the avast4.ini file) when the system is idle.

Thanks for the help, DavidR.

Since I've forced the update, I will simply wait a couple of weeks to see what happens next. I've put (another) Post-It on the monitor to remind me and have printed your final answer as reference.

One final thing...where do I find the avast4.ini file, and how do I edit it to change the default regeneration cycle from 3 weeks to 2 weeks?

Check out this thread for lots of options you can set through the avast.ini file. Understanding avast4.ini file

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\avast4.ini

I've read the thread and located the file. Now what is the procedure for changing the default 3 week interval to 2 weeks?

Do I simply change the value of the time, in seconds and do a "save as..." and replace the existing file with one of an identical name but containing the new value?

The delay is in minutes so RunInterval=20160 this is two weeks.

The safer bet is to take a copy of the avast4.ini and save it in a diferent folder just in case, edit the one in the Avast4 folder and save the changes.
