hi Dch48,

virtualization is on. was working fine on v2215, but not offered by installers.
still wondering if processor speed, for example, requirements have been changed. anyone?
and thanks for your response Dch48.

skinnypops
turn off protection module and open a cmd prompt with admin rights in same folder as ngtool, type ngtool avast install, if not supported it tell you required cpu speed

HELP.....seems I'm having similar problems as some other users.

My platform is a Dell Vostro 420 desktop 3GB ram 2 Quad CPU
XP Pro SP 3

Updated to latest  version (2015.10.2.2218) and problems began. Slow and incomplete boot into windows. Many times it would paint the screen with all icons and then halt. Could not get any response.....mouse would move the arrow but no programs would respond when selected......even task manager would not come up.

Did a hard reboot many times. Similar response.
Eventually booted in safe mode and uninstalled the Avast program.

Downloaded and installed 10.2.2215 and all is back to working.

Have a Dell laptop running XP Pro SP 3 with similar problems.....but it will eventually come up running if rebooted and allowed a very long time (15-20 minutes) to get the Avast icon in the tray. WOW.....all programs respond VERY slowly until that happens.

HELP

@ Joe96

I also have Avast installed on Dell Laptop. My system has limited Ram (less then 3GB, which is not a lot) so I've had to be careful just what I install from the Avast installation options otherwise the software can be very resource demanding with only 2GB or 3GB of RAM
I always choose "custom install" which shows all the 'extra' tools installed along side of the Antivirus.
If you didn't choose custom install I suggest you go to Control Panel/Programs/Add and Remove/Avast Click Change. When Install Panel appears scroll and Select "Change" and review all the options in the "Tools"(middle) column.
Uncheck anything that you don't want or don't know what it does. :)

Hello,

I have started Steam and run a game. Since than - about an hour - aswfe.exe is grabbing 50% of my 2-core cpu. I've read some threads talking about 8 hours and longer. I don't have a sandbox in Avast Free. So why do I need this?

Best regard ...

Is there a bug somewhere?
My overview says all Shields active and everything up to date...
However, I'm getting an Avast popup that tells me my virus definitions and program is out of date.
When I click to update it opens the Update section, tries to download and says everything is already up to date
Engine and definitions: 150421-1
Program: 2015.10.2.2215

Any ideas?

Hi jaydeeinchina.

If it is really Program: 2015.10.2.2215 and not a typo, you are one program version behind. It should say 2218 like the topic title. So you should upgrade that version.

1. ) Download your Avast : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
                                           http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe
                                           http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
                                           http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe
2. ) Download avastclear.exe

3. ) Execute avastclear

4. ) Reinstall Avast.

If you have the correct version do a repair.

Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > uninstall a program > select avast! and click " Uninstall/Change ". Highlight " Repair ". Click Continue.

Reboot when finished.

Hello foxTAH,

in short answer, yes, it's normal.

avastvboxsvc.exe is a part of new Avast DeepScreen - named Avast NG.
Avast NG analyzes unknown files in safe virtual environment to determine the file is malicious or not.

That means avastvboxsvc.exe is proteced by self-defense module, thus you cannot shut it down via task manager.

I originally posted this comment on April 23, 2015.  It read as follows:-
"I see that some other respondents have successfully installed version 2015.10.2.2218 on Windows XP SP3.   I am sorry to say that I have had to revert to version 2015.10.2.2215 because the system would not respond after installation and hanged after logging on at restart.  I ran avastclear.exe in safe mode and did a clean install of version 2015.10.2.2218 but to no avail.  Reverted to previous version by repeating avastclear.exe and cleanly installed version 2015.10.2.2215  without trouble."

I have since had similar problems with another old PC.  The two systems that I have been unable to use Avast antivirus 2015 R2SP2 (2015.10.2.2218) on are a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop and an Acer TravelMate 220 laptop.  Both of these run Windows XP SP3 and both lack the SSE2 instruction capability.

Both laptops run Avast antivirus 2015.10.2.2215 without problems.

It would be useful for us users of pre-historic hardware to know what restrictions apply to using current Avast versions on PCs which date back into the mists of antiquity.

After a crash, I just reinstalled my OS: Win XP64, sp2.  In addition to reinstalling other software, I also donwloaded the most recent Free Anti Virus (as of May 23, 2015), and attempted to install.  Progress bar got all the way across, then hung (forever; tried 3 times).  The destination directory appeared full, but the desktop icon was placed, but empty.  "Computer Admin | add/remove programs didn't show avast. Cntr-Alt-Del couldn't kill the installation.

The only way out was to reboot.  But this caused even worse problem:  it trashed my video driver (NVIDIO, gfx660Ti; three times reproducibly!), requiring either reinstallation of video driver in "safe mode" or restoring boot drive from back-up image.

I'm not keen on trying again, until someone has some really convincing ideas on how to circumvent the problem.

Thnaks for any help,
Bob W.

@ Robert374,

Welcome to the forums,

Suggest running sfc /scannow, allow it to complete and see what results.
Also suggest ensuring your hard drive is in good condition:
http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810&sid=3&lang=en
http://www.hgst.com/support/downloads
Since no mention of model/make of hard drive was made in your original post, above is provided for use.  Original system crash likely not related to your current issues with installing avast!, but possibly caused by undetected issues with your hard drive, so you'll need to ensure your hard drive is in good working condition; if you find bad sectors, then consider replacing the hard drive before complete failure occurs, especially if it is old or original.

Always check hardware, particularly when issues arise in installing new software.  If you do these steps, at the very least you will know either the hdd is good, or will have found the root source of your installation issues when you are done.
