1. I originally posted this comment on April 23, 2015.  It read as follows:-
"I see that some other respondents have successfully installed version 2015.10.2.2218 on Windows XP SP3.   I am sorry to say that I have had to revert to version 2015.10.2.2215 because the system would not respond after installation and hanged after logging on at restart.  I ran avastclear.exe in safe mode and did a clean install of version 2015.10.2.2218 but to no avail.  Reverted to previous version by repeating avastclear.exe and cleanly installed version 2015.10.2.2215  without trouble."
2. It would be useful for us users of pre-historic hardware to know what restrictions apply to using current Avast versions on PCs which date back into the mists of antiquity.

1. Did you install '2015.10.2.2218' Free or Pro or AIS or PREMIER? Every installation was 'user-defined'?
2. Sorry to say, that I've only two machines left with 'XP SP3' and both running fine without any issue.

It was the Free version.  The target PCs are both 12 year-old laptops with Intel Celeron or Pentium 4 processors.  These lack the SSE2 instructions.  Since such machines are probably little used, this is probably why I am the only user here to report this difficulty.  Avast Free version 2015.10.2.2215 works quickly and well.  I used the same procedures to install 2215 and 2218 so there seems to be a change from 2215 to 2218 which does not adversely affect more recent hardware than that which I am using.

I have seen no messages about illegal instructions.  The systems each just hang at restart following installation and are completely unresponsive.

Are you also from Kent, HDW38?  I noticed the Invicta horse.

1. My machines are older than yours, no laptops and the SSE-features are supported. Don't know, if that's the reaseon for your trouble. The installations were 'user-defined' or not? Did you try a repair?
2. Often it doesn't need any message, that something went wrong during the installation.
3. Sorry, no. My horse is Westfalian (--> Porta Westfalica).

I have this installed on 5 different computers( Free Version), and since yesterday I have been continually notified that it requires updating, but when agreeing to this the update gives an error relating to an invalid file signature, and then claims already up to date.

Hello and welcome to the Forum! :)

You could try a repair of Avast:
1. Control Panel -> Programs & Features -> avast!
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

Would be what I would expect to do if only on one pc, but as it is happening an about 5, all different, all set up differently, this leads me to suspect some error at the Avast server?

Hi, I would be interested to see your log files (C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Persistent Data\Avast\Logs). Can you send them to me or use our support tool and let me know its id?

After updating to this version I can no longer print from my SQL database program using a local usb printer or network IP printer. I have 2 computers using the free version and the problem is the same on both. The fix is to disable the shields. While disabled I can print normally. All windows programs print fine, just not from the SQL program sold by Activant software, they have no clue or advice on this matter.
When the file shields are enabled this message shows up in the event viewer:
"An exception occurred in Crystallintegration (mscorlib): The path is not of a legal form"
It goes on to list the program name and directory, this directory is in my exclude list as well as the form directory which is not called in this event err. My guess is Crystal reports is trying to write a temporary file somewhere and Avast is stopping it from writing. With the shields disabled the print job goes and does not trigger this err msg.
I have seen on other forums where this has been an issue and was cured by going back to 10.2.2215, where can I download that version.

Further to my posts about the problem with Windows XP and Avast antivirus 2015 R2SP2 (2015.10.2.2218), I tried to install it on another older computer, this time with an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ processor.  This lacks the SSE2 instructions like the old laptops which I had previously tried to install Avast antivirus 2015 R2SP2 (2015.10.2.2218) on.  This circumstantial evidence has convinced me that Avast techs may have assumed that all their users now employ 64-bit hardware and so, perhaps unintentionally, have prevented users of computers with 32-bit processors from running Avast.

Before resorting to AVG 2015, I took a copy of the Logs folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Avast.  Could someone at Avast please tell me if they would like me to forward it to them.

I am also running Avast 2015 R2SP2 (2015.10.2.2218) on a machine with Win XP Pro_86 Spk 3 with no problems whatsoever. That is a 9 years old work horse.

A definition of a computer with a 32-bit ONLY processor:
If you CANNOT install and run the latest version of Google Chrome (currently version 43) then the processor is ONLY 32-bit capable.  It appears to me that Avast antivirus 2015 R2SP2 (2015.10.2.2218) has a problem with such processors.

I believe that there is an unrealised difference between Avast antivirus 2015 R2SP2 (2015.10.2.2218) and the previous version of Avast which makes the difference between the previous version running and the current version not running.  This has happened on three incarnations of Windows XP SP3.

I have to admit some confusion over the meaning of SSE2.  I now realise that SSE2 instructions have nothing to do with 64-bit capability.

Regarding the logs, I am uncertain if drake127 was addressing me.  In any case, I will send the logs as drake127 suggests.

@hake

Are you really sure, that you're wright with everthing you wrote in this thread???
I hope that you see in my screenshot, that there are other facts, which causes your problem.
There is only 'SSE', no XP, running 'avast! Free 2015.10.2.2218' with W7 (fine as on my 2 XP machines).
